King of Beggars4 reviews
Stephen Chow, Man Tat Ng

Tai Seng, 1998

Very Enjoyable Although The Ending Gets Sloppy
I've seen most of Stephen Chow's movies and would rank "King Of Beggars" among his better works. I thought it was a really hilarious film, with a good plot and premise, although the ending feels a bit rushed and sloppy. Basic plot: Chow plays "So Chan", the very spoiled son of the governor of Canton. He meets a courtesan, Yu-Shang, who tells him she will only have him if he becomes a great ...

Chinese Odyssey11 reviews
Stephen Chow, Athena Chu

Import [Generic], 2002

Great movie
"A Chinese Odyssey: Pandora's Box" and "A Chinese Odyssey: Cinderella" is a two-parts series movie. Together, it is my favorite Chinese movie of all time. It's a modern and humorous twist on the famous Chinese story of "The Journey West" (also known as "The Monkey King"). In the first part, the Monkey King has been reincarnated as Joker, the leader of a group of bandits... However, I'm ...

God of Cookery25 reviews
Stephen Chow, Christy Chung

Tai Seng, 1998

Very funny show
I got this movie based on a reccomendation by Alton Brown and I'm glad I did. Steven Chaiu is one of the funniest film makers coming out of China right now. It does contain a bit of cultural humor so if you don't know much about Chinese culture you might not get a lot of it. It's a bit silly by American standards. All this aside I watch this over and over again. Very funny movie!

Fight Back to School6 reviews
Stephen Chow, Man Tat Ng

Tai Seng, 2006

One of the best Stephen Chow movies
Although it lacks the polish and CGI of his latest efforts, "Shaolin Soccer" and "Kung Fu Hustle," this movie was still hugely entertaining, especially if you like Chow's "moleitau" (nonsense humor). Chow plays Star Chow, a cop who goes undercover as a student in order to find a missing gun. He is understandably annoyed, shouting at his senior, "I wanted to be a cop so I didn't have to go ...

A Better Tomorrow II42 reviews
Dean Shek, Lung Ti

Starz / Anchor Bay, 2001

A MUST OWN
The Hong Kong Godfather. Without a doubt this movie proves that John Woo is the best action director of all time, the vision, style, and the sher genious that he (Woo) uses in the direction of this movie is what sets it apart from and american action movie ever made. The action in this movie plays out like a ballet, a dance with bullets and blood. So put down those typical american action ...

Wong Kar Wai Collection (As Tears Go By / Days of Being Wild / Fallen Angels / Chungking Express / Happy ...2 reviews
Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung

Kino Video, 2004

Two words: Get it
I don't have a lot to add to "Randroid"'s review. Wong Kar-Wai is one of the world's premier directors, making audacious, complex films that grab one's heart. Influenced by the French New Wave, bent through the prism of Hong Kong cinema, his is a stylish and unique vision. This box set contains five of his seven films that have been released to DVD: -- As Tears Go By -- Days of Being Wild ...

Legacy of Rage14 reviews
Brandon Lee, Bolo Yeung

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, 2005

Something special :-)
Legacy Of Rage is a wonderful action thriller with great storytelling and character development, emotionally captivating actors and actresses, a cool sountrack, and explosive gun battles and few but very brutal non-stylistic, white-knuckle fight sequences choregraphed and starring Mang Hoi, and featuring the late-great Brandon Lee who showed such wonderful potential for HK (and perhaps US) action ...

Fist of the Red Dragon16 reviews
Fong Pao, Sheila Chan

Sony Pictures, 2004

Mostly Silliness, Awesome Fights!
Like many people have said in earlier reviews, there is a lot of "junk" to get through in the beginning of the movie. First you must endure the notorious aunt, who is indeed very annoying. I like it best when So's dad slaps her teeth out at the end. However, I found that the opium parts were not too bad since they were a central point of the plot (no matter how hobbychobby it may have been). ...

Shaolin Soccer [IMPORT]127 reviews
Cecilia Cheung, Stephen Chow

Universe Laser & Video Co., Limited, 2001

Stephen Chow is remarkable!
This is a hilarious and heart-warming tale of a group of downtrodden kung fu brothers who find new life in the world of football (soccer). It features the dynamic and hugely entertaining Stephen Chow, a man who makes his comrades in Western success Jackie Chan and Jet Li pale in comparison. Where Li is wooden and dull and Chan tries far too hard, Chow has an indifference that is refreshing. In ...

To Be Number One2 reviews
Kent Cheng, Cecilia Yip

Tai Seng, 2001

Chinese Scarface kill you long time...
This film is essentially the HK version of Scarface with slight remnants of the Stink...oops, i mean Godfather. But from what i have researched (yes, i am a nerd with certain types of films), it is based on a real story of a gangster named Ho. He's a man with a vision and if you get in his way, awww shucks....He will not be disrespected and will not back down. The dude who plays him is ...

A Moment of Romance9 reviews
Chung Lam, Kong Lau

Tai Seng Video Marketing, 2000

A Classic Of Its Genre
A Moment of Romance is responsible for many a Hong Kong Cinema cliché, and indeed the film is itself far from original. A disaffected youth, a "good girl" romantic interest and a cartoonish villain all figure into the 1990 hit. Director Benny Chan has his way with the clichés, and throws in enough slow motion, syrupy Cantopop montages and hyperemotional crescendos to tax even the most weepy ...

King of Comedy6 reviews
Jackie Chan, Joe Cheng

Universe Italy, 2001

biography of Stephen Chow
This is one of Stephen Chow's best movies. Only second to his "Chinese Odyssey" series, in my opinion. The whole movie seems like his biography as an actor who started small and because of his "professional spirit" or non-stopping pursue achieved his goal of becoming a "real" actor (actually king of comedy) in the end. A bit of Cinderella kind of flavor. But the plot is great and the pace ...

Blood Stained Tradewind1 review
Fong Pao, Kuan Tai Chen

Image Entertainment, 2007

Just your average bloodstained Triad movie
Waise Lee(Xiong) and Alex Fong(Cheng) are considered brothers and are part of a crime family. Because of the outstanding work they have done, it has been decided that their father(the mob boss) will appoint one of them to become the new leader of the gang. Cheng(Alex Fong) is appointed, but he thinks that it should have been his brother. His father gets very angry and orders him to leave after he ...

John Wakefield (II), Sarah Lee (III)

Tai Seng, 2006

Better Than the Original
I was inspired to see this after seeing the original, and this one falls into that rare category of "Sequel Good As / Better Than the Original". Stephen Chow is truly hysterical; I can't remember laughing so hard in a long time. Check this out, it is well worth your while.
