Mozart - Cosi fan Tutte16 reviews
Miah Persson, Luca Pisaroni

BBC / Opus Arte, 2007

Hats off to S. Director Hytner. Don't miss this DVD.
This DVD is my favorite "Cosí" from now on, and my old Harnoncourt-Bartoli-Baltsa-Zurich set has become my "other" one. Why is this? Are the singers, or the orchestra, or the conductor much better in the new version? No, I can't say that. Though she's a wonderful singer, beautiful Miah Persson can't deliver the demoniac "Come scoglio" as Cecilia Bartoli masterly does (who can?). And Topi ...

Don Giovanni [Blu-ray]8 reviews
Simon Keenlyside, Joyce DiDonato

Opus Arte, 2009

Superb In All Respects
This is the most completely satisfying video production of Don Giovanni I have encountered to date. Allow me first to assuage concerns regarding the sound on this Blu-Ray disc -- succinctly put, the LPCM 5.1 sound is impeccable. The singing, acting, conducting, design, stage direction, and video direction converge ideally with each other to create a jewel of operatic performance. The result is ...

Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier8 reviews

Tdk DVD Video, 2006

THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL
It's a vivid recording; the next best thing to live. Robert Carson, the stage director, and Peter Pabst, the set and costume designer, fumble Act II by setting it in a dinning hall, and really push the bounds of propriety in Act III by setting it in the best little whorehouse in Germany. Obviously, we buy opera on DVD to see as well as to hear, but the conductor, orchestra, and singers are all so ...

Mozart - Mitridate5 reviews
Richard Croft, Miah Persson

Decca, 2007

Never a boring moment
Great singing, acting, and music. Having everyone on stage throughout the entire opera kept it from getting visaually boring. I enjoyed watching everyone not just the one singing, especially Bejun Mehta. At first I was puzzled by his voice, but when I googled his name and got more information on him and countertenors, I could appreciate his voice and realize how amazing he is. We have to ...

Mozart: Cosi Fan Tutte [Blu-ray]5 reviews

BBC / Opus Arte, 2009

A stunningly beautiful, gorgeously traditional blu-ray Cosi
Last of the three Mozart-Da Ponte operas, Cosi Fan Tutte (They all do it) premiered in January 1790. Mozart was in despondent spirits during the two dark years of 1789-90. His own health was poor, his wife Constanze was also frequently ill, and money was scarce as a result of a war induced economic depression in Austria. It was during this period - in which his frequent begging letters to fellow ...

Richard Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier1 review
Adrianne Pieczonka, Franz Hawlata

Arthaus Musik, 2010

Mostly Good, but with some Surprises and Shocks
[This DVD was previously released in 2006 on TDK. The following is my review from then.] Salzburg Festival opera productions in the last few years have been infected with some of the worst of the Regietheater mystique and one comes to this DVD of a live performance at the 2004 production with some trepidation. But any concerns about how this opera could be Eurotrashed by the stage director are ...

Verdi - Falstaff / White, McGreevy, Hellekant, Jupither, Persson, Beuron, Gubisch, Mazzola, Aix-en-Provence2 reviews
Willard White, Geraldine McGreevy

Arthaus Musik, 2003

An unusual production, poorly filmed
In response to another reviewer, I must first mention that the letterboxing worked fine on my non-widescreen TV. As to the opera itself, this is an interesting production, beautifully sung, with a clever scenic design. The cast is lively and engaging, and the same can be said for much of the staging; some moments, however, are oddly static. Willard White sings the title role, and sings it well. ...

Le Nozze di Figaro [Blu-ray]20 reviews
Rinat Shaham, Gerald Finley

Bbc / Opus, 2009

An excellent Figaro in high definition Blu-ray
Mozart's 1786 opera buffa Le Nozze di Figaro was controversial from the beginning. Napoleon described Beaumarchais' play - upon which da Ponte based his libretto - as "the Revolution in action." Although Emperor Joseph gave Mozart his sovereign permission to present the new opera in Vienna, imagine the poor monarch squirming in his plush box seat as he watched a mere servant outwit a member of ...
