Communication breakdown
Paul Newman stars as Luke along with a marvellous cast in a prison gang film set in the deep south. Luke is a former war hero who when very drunk one night starts damaging parking meters (the very beginning of the film) and ends up serving time. Although apparently a very laid back character, the death of his mother changes Luke's attitude and the film hinges on this critical moment. I've ...

To hockey what "Bull Durham" is to baseball
Just one of those 'classic' sports movies. Aside from the 70s nostalgia, it's the fact that if you've ever worked or played in the minor leagues this movie will ring absolutely true. I finally burned out my old VHS version that I played every October when the NHL starts up. The names, the references, the laughs; even if you don't like hockey, "Slap Shot" can be appreciated for what it is - a look ...

One of Hollywood's Greatest All-Time Movies
An absolute classic, timeless and brilliant... witty and dramatic, funny and engaging, starring two of Hollywood's greatest leading men in an unforgettable and magnificently told tale of two of the Old West's most legendary figures. This is more than simply a must-see movie, it is a can't miss, see it time and time again classic!

One of my ten favorite movies!
I bought the "Legacy Series" disc to get a wide screen version, and it is a very fine upgrade from my older 4:3 aspect version. I can't comment on the additional content of the second disc. I generally don't even watch that stuff.

A good John Wayne Western (Waynestern) and the second installment of the Howard Hawks trilogy
Some say that Howard Hawks made the same picture three times with Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo. In the broad strokes, it is true. John Wayne isn't the straight romantic lead in any of them, but has his interests. There are several beautiful young women in different roles in the film and there is a younger man, usually a male star that someone is trying to push (Ricky Nelson, James Caan, ...

Never forget!
Most people don't think of Exodus when they think of epic movies. And, maybe it's not a true epic, maybe a mini-epic. The re-foundation of Israel in 1948 was nothing short of a miracle. The film does a nice job of showing the struggle of post-WW2 Jews re-founding their nation. Enjoy.

Excellent movie whether you're a car guy or not!
I rented Vanishing Point because I'm a car nut, and especially like the old muscle cars of the '60s and '70s like the 1970 Dodge Challenger that's driven in the film. The movie definately satisfies the car nut in me, with all of the chase scenes, but if you rent it just for that you're missing the whole point of the film. Vanishing Point is the story of an ex-cop, ex-Vietnam Vet named Kowalski. ...

What a great movie
There are very few directors as good as Sidney Lumet and there are even fewer writers as good as David Mamet. Throw in Paul Newman and James Mason, in roles that stand out in their outstanding careers, and you understand what makes "The Verdict" such a classic. When it comes to legal thrillers, it doesn't get any better than this.

Atmospheric Prohibition-era coming-of-age gem
Nothing I can say about this great movie hasn't already been said, but I love it so dearly I must write about it. It is ultimately a story of love and betrayal, duty and devotion, tempered by the stark black-and-white sensibilities of 30s-era crime lords and the social auras of that time. Tom Hanks - who can play anything flawlessly, from drama to comedy - is Michael Sullivan, a man who came ...

A great sequel
A sequel of sorts of Newman's 1960 THE HUSTLER, and a great one. Newman, long out of the pool game now, but still unable to forget it, finds Tom Cruise shooting the daylights out of the game one night and talks the brash young kid into going on the road and becoming a hustler, with Newman as his mentor. Then halfway through the picture Newman gets the bug to play again. He and Cruise meet up in ...

Best freaking movie ever.
There are only a few people who can capture late 30's camp this well, and the Brothers are among those people. It's witty, quick and endearing. I love Tim Robbins and Leigh is incredible (and hot) throughout the whole movie. AND... it's got Bruce Campbel in it... for any of you fans out there.

The closest I have come to actually being on the Moon!
I have dreamed about space travel and going to the Moon for much of my life. This film is quite imaginative and exhilirating. I took my kids to see the IMAX version- we all were stunned silent by the drama that unfolded. You can read about this story many times, but actually feeling it is different. -Tahir Rahman, author of We Came in Peace for all Mankind: the untold story of the Apollo ...

NOBODY'S RIGHT WHEN EVERYBODY'S WRONG
I first saw this film in 1961, and for my money it's probably the most realistic ever. Here's one; this reviewer can actually smell the grime as it passes through the screen. The indescribable stench of an old pool hall, the grit of a bus terminal, where your next cup of coffee may be your last, the sleazy bar that never seems to close, the self named bums who inhabit such places are all a part ...

An accurate portrayal of journalism
When this movie came out, I was a reporter at a daily newspaper. I went to "Absence of Malice" fully prepared to hate it. Instead, I came away thinking that it was an accurate and believable portrayal of what happens in a newsroom. To this day, I am bothered that journalists too often fail to understand the impact their words have on people's lives. Most journalists I've known prefer to insulate ...

Physical Perfection : Hard to Beat this One
I have to say, I first saw this about 15 years ago, when I was around 16 years old. At the time, I remember thinking - how could a man and woman look as perfect? Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman are at their physical peak in this film, and I don't think either of them looked better in any film pre or post this movie. Due to their overwhelming physical beauty, its hard to get involved in the ...

Ocean waves and gorgeous sceneries surround this unique and refreshing love story...
"Message in the Bottle" is, like the tag-line suggests, a tale of love lost and found. The way I was introduced to this film is rather interesting, I suppose. Many years ago I came across it when I was searching online for information regarding the 1977 classic Disney film "The Rescuers." Both films share the theme of the "message in the bottle" so the connection lead me to this 1999 film. ...
