One of the All-Time Best Sherlock Holmes Tales
I was very excited when this finally was remastered and released on DVD. I have always found the black & white films to provide an added element of mystery to the tales, and I must confess that I am partial to them for this reason. This restoration from the original was very well done. Having seen many different actors portray the legendary Sherlock Holmes, I have always found the ...

The Awful Truth!
This is a very sweet Cary Grant and Irene Dunne comedy. A couple with differences decide to divorce but can't seem to get it through their heads that their marriage will be ending. Lots of fun.

"Out! I close the iron door."
Howard Hawks filmed this elegantly madcap look at actor's egos. John Barrymore, with some help from Carole Lombard, stayed upright long enough to give one more great performance on film. He's a producer with an ego bigger than the Great White Way and she's a lingere model he molds into the toast of Broadway. Once she becomes a huge star, however, she wants to live it up rather than sit around ...

Creepy And Tense
This is another of the genre from the 30s about people wrongfully accused of crimes they did not commit. Unlike today when people were covicted of murder back then they did not get years and years of appeals. Instead they were exectuted fairly quickly. So if you were wrongly accused you had to fight for your life. In this case the guy is lucky that he has a lot of friends who stand up for him ...

Royal entertainment
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex may have been the set from hell - Bette Davis despised Errol Flynn, who hated director Michael Curtiz while Olivia De Havilland was given a thankless supporting role as Jack Warner's way of keeping her in her place after the success of Gone With the Wind - but it turned out rather splendidly. Offering Hollywood rather than history, and with all the ...

Star Studded Sherlock
This collection was everything I thought it would be and more. The collection is presented quite pleasingly in a book style case that I feel anyone would be proud to have on their bookshelf. The disc themselves are also very attractive and the films have been painstakingly enhanced by modern digital technology and their quality is superior. I am extremely happy with my purchase and very ...

pimple-free and genuinely moving
One of my favorite teaching units over the years has been comparing film versions of Shakespeare. My adult students preferred the "active gore" in Polanski's MACBETH over what I found to be the riches of the Densch/McKellan version, and similarly preferred the panting adolescents of Zeffirelli's version to the double-aged Cukor film. Eros by any other name.... My bias for the Cukor version ...

WWI spy story by Charlie Chan's creator
ALPHA VIDEO's dvd edition of the RKO early "talkie," INSIDE THE LINES is a WWI espionage story scripted by Earl Derr Biggers, creator of Charlie Chan. In it, Betty Compson is an English gal who reunites in Gibraltar with an old flame, a German portrayed by Ralph Forbes. Each suspects the other of being involved in nefarious activities. Are they BOTH secret agents or are neither of them spies? ...

The mob wants to cut in on a popular radio crooner's action, while the crooner's mob-connected girlfriend wants him to quit chasing the skirts and settle down with her. Meanwhile, the crooner's manager occupies his time answering the crooner's fan mail (hundreds of letters a day) and waxing philosophic when a pretty young woman with a world-class singing voice arrives for an unscheduled audition. ...

In 1775, Daniel Boone leads thirty settler families to Kentucky where they face two threats: Indian raiders led by a renegade white man, who opposes settlement: and the schemes of another, who wishes to seize title to the new land.

Mediocre Foreign Legion tale
... and I don't mean mediocre by today's standards. I've recently watched a number of films from 1930/1931 and the dialog in this is absurd. As is the delivery. Another strike against it is that prominently billed Loretta Young is only seen for a few minutes, less than the other attractive lady Leni Stengel. Plot-wise, the beginning to it was effective in grabbing your interest (why are those ...

Good movie,terrible transfer to DVD
Being a George O'Brien fan l immediately jumped at the chance of buying this DVD.Unfortunately the quality (sound and picture) are terrible. There is so much damage done to this copy, that at times it is difficult to understand what the actors are saying. I will never buy a DVD from this company again.Don't waste your money.

Movies of "convict"ion
ST. CLAIR DVD multi-packs are reasonably priced, and offer fine quality video/audio transfers of unrestored public domain material. Discs are single-side recorded, plastic storage cases fairly sturdy, liner notes appear on box's back cover. Like gangster movies, prison films enjoyed a heyday in the 1930s and '40s. The dozen hour-length B&W examples from that era in the PRISON BREAK CLASSICS ...

Boy soprano extraordinaire
Bobby Breen had a stellar (if brief) movie career: eight starring roles from 1936 to '39, plus one final 1942 appearance (in "Johnny Doughboy") along with other former child phenoms Jane Withers, Spanky McFarland and Alfalfa Switzer. In his youthful prime, Bobby was the most famous boy singer of the 1930s, performing songs in English, French, Italian and Spanish. The soprano-voiced ...
