Modern Shakespeare
Great video. I used it in the classroom and showed several clips to coincide with the text. The casting director made some great choices and the director stays true to Shakespeare's story as he would want it told. The "To be or not to be" soliloquy is done beautifully--very introspective and spoken as Hamlet walks through a Blockbuster. There are a few things taken out of order, but only done ...

Its name: EVENT HORIZON. The high-tech, pioneering research spacecraft mysteriously vanished, without a trace, on its maiden voyage seven years earlier. But a weak, persistent signal form the long-missing craft prompts a rescue team, headed by the intrepid Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne, THE MATRIX and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III ), to wing its way through the galaxy on a bold rescue mission. Accompanying Miller is his elite crew and the lost ...

Come on, carpers! Let Shakespeare be fun!
First, the stars. No, not the astrologer's stars, the movie stars, goofy! Some of those high priced people can act! Of course, I'm in luck in that I see so few Hollywood movies that I don't recognize them, so it's easy to suspend disbelief. The one I did recognize was Stanley Tucci, the star of Big Night. Tucci was spectacular in the role of Puck; he stole every scene he appeared in. That guy ...

Thriller of an event.
Event Horizon is a tightly constructed science fiction movie. It doesn't have all of the star power one would want or all the special effects, but it has a tight almost seamless storyline. The story is what propels this movie - it doesn't lack for thrills or action where it is required. This one is for all fans of great movie science fiction.

I wish I had seen this when I was a kid.
It was probably just the result of an excellent marketing campaign, but Stephen King is known around the world as THE Master of Horror. I've read a lot of Stephen King novels and seen even more movies based on them, and I have always felt that King achieves mixed results in his work. Some of it is excellent, and some of it leaves you feeling as though he lost interest in the story and just ...

Easily the best Arm Wrestling movie of all time!
Over the Top is exactly that, over the top. The clever title is an obvious double-entendre in that it's a story about arm-wrestling that is completely ridiculous; yet, it somehow manages to be a highly enjoyable movie with real, albeit unanticipated, drama. Amidst the preposterous father-son bonding, in which a borderline mongloid named Hawk (Sylvester Stallone) shares a long-haul trucking ...

Harlem a jungle inside a city!
Harlem is the sinister landscape where every man has to survive according his basic insticts. There's no time for redemption, there's no way out for your elusive dreams, in many ways this film is very close in spirit to Carlito's way where any man can be able to escape from his past. This movie is a potent Noir, but viewed from the opposite side of the street. If Spike Lee captured all our ...

A mystery par excellence
Masterpiece Theatre - Painted Lady (1997) I'm a passionate Helen Mirren fan so was excited to see one of my favorite masterpiece Theatre programs come out in DVD. Painted Lady was created for Helen Mirren, and it's easy to see why. She fits the role as no one else could--of Maggie Sheridan, a down-on-her-luck former rock singer and former addict who was taken in by Sir Charles Stafford ...

I love this movie! The cast is phenomenal. The writing is exceptional. And the plot is very moving. The theme of the movie is all about the family staying together through thick and thin. This is one of my absolute favorites!

Heaven's Gate
Slow and plodding, but beautifully shot and well worth watching. Although I prefer more action in a western, I also realize that in reality, the "old west" consisted of a slow, plodding existence. (The so-called "REALITY" shows on TV need to take note - There is very little, if any, reality invovlved in those shows).

Sense of purpose
This is a great movie about Apollo 11's landing on Moon. It is 1969, time when there was only black and white television. Yet, physicists were using telemetry and satellite dish for mapping the starts in the sky, that could now be used to pick up that radio signal from far away. We get to see a small group of staff in Parkes, Australia that is tasked to pick up the signal from Apollo when ...

Quick ship - Perfect Condition
I loved this movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's character was so creepy, and she WAS her character. Especially her eyes - from the long stares to the furtive glances. Even her supposed redemption was negated by her eyes - glance, stare, meaning behind the act. The story was heart-rending, and the movie is NOT for those looking for action and Rambo. This is just a well-acted and directed movie with a ...

Essential Ornithology
Some time after Unforgiven in the 90s I began to revise my thoughts about Clint. I had been used to him being the prototype of the mindless wordless macho or the rightwing law and order guy. Hard to take him seriously. Then he became somebody else. I heard that he had made a film about Charlie Parker in the late 80s, but I never found that one. Well, now my daughter found it for me somewhere in ...

A Timeless Film
This is a great movie. It has everything: great scenery and background music, courtroom drama, young love, suspense, and human interest. I view it over and over again, learning something more each time about human frailties and prejudices. It is vastly superior to the trash being produced these days that relies on sex, violence, special effects and ear shattering sound without a plot and very ...
