A Home of our Own29 reviews
Kathy Bates, Tony Campisi

MGM (Video & DVD), 2001

For anyone who ever heard the story that their parents had to walk 20 miles in snow to school everyday
When I was little, my mother would pack up the Packard and load us kids in the back seat. She's bring along a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread in case we got hungry. And she'd drive cross country to meet my dad in whatever port he had been stationed. Once, during a blizzard, my older sister changed a rather rank diaper on my little brother. RAther that travel with the nasty thing in ...

The Servant16 reviews
Dirk Bogarde, Sarah Miles

Starz / Anchor Bay, 2001

Very British
"The Servant" Very British Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride Looking back to 1963, I found a British classic which tackled homosexuality long before America incorporated gay themes into movies. With a screenplay by master playwright Harold Pinter and directed by the wonderful Joseph Losey, how could a film go wrong? "The Servant" has a great script, admirable acting and excellent direction. ...

Poirot - The New Mysteries Collection (Death on the Nile / Sad Cypress / The Hollow / Five Little Pigs)35 reviews
David Suchet, Elisabeth Dermot Walsh

A&E Home Video, 2005

Perfect Poirot,- perpetually personifying perspicacity.
David Suchet is the quintessential Poirot. It will be a long, long time before anyone will again be able to play the role convincingly, after the superlative portrayal of the splendid Belgium Detective dreamed up by Agatha Christie. To see Suchet as Poirot, is to believe the character has come alive before your very eyes. None could give the Christie stories more credence, than David Suchet - ...

Ryan's Daughter (Two-Disc Special Edition)70 reviews
Robert Mitchum, Trevor Howard

Warner Home Video, 2006

Masterpiece
A masterpiece and IMO David Lean's best film by far. A good story (originating in Madame Bovary) with excellent screenplay (by Robert Bolt) and production. Several superb performances, but Sarah Miles is outstanding and not just as a beauty. She plays the part of Rosie Ryan to perfection and is totally convincing. Fabulous scenery though some of the shots, taken out of necessity on a South ...

Blow Up156 reviews
Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles

Warner Home Video, 2004

Awesome and inspiring!
The passion and art of photography are melded in this film so well. David Hemmings is brilliant. What a player, sorry I meant actor ;-) Mind you, things aren't always what they seem in this film. Watch the film to know what I mean! Top movie! 5 stars.

Dandelion Dead5 reviews
Michael Kitchen, Sarah Miles

Hbo Home Video, 2002

ABSORBED
"Dandelion Dead" is a really riveting presentation. It kind of sneaked up on me. At first, I found myself just enjoying the recreation, on screen, of a very idyllic time (1920) and place (small country town) with the seemingly gentle and harmless character of Major Herbert Armstrong played superbly by Michael Kitchen along with his most irritating wife wonderfully (and surprisingly for me) ...

Staying Alive (Widescreen Edition)72 reviews
Steve Bickford, Julie Bovasso

Paramount, 2002

Loved it
Of course the end song is fantastic "staying alive", Bee Gees' best song. The movie has a simple yet realistic story. It flows easily. It's a lot of fun. I don't agree with the values it exposes but they may not be unrealistic. I recommend it if you like a fun, light, and uninsalting-to-your-intelligence-by-having-a-dumb-story movie. Travolta was made for the role and his acting was great.

Dirk Bogarde Collection (Accident/The Mind Benders/The Servant)5 reviews
Dirk Bogarde, Sarah Miles

Starz / Anchor Bay, 2001

Comulsory for Fans of 1960s British Cinema
This DVD release of "The Servant" "Accident" & "The Mind Benders" gets 5 stars here, simply because the three films are so well-presented (and the cost is so reasonable). Extras are skimpy: original trailers (it is quite informative to see how such challenging films were marketed in the early 1960s) and sketchy notes on the artists ("Victim", for example, in which Bogarde starred in 1961, is not ...

James Michener's Dynasty3 reviews
Sarah Miles, Stacy Keach

Platinum Disc, 2004

Could Have Been Better.
Deception, envy, and greed divide the Blackwoods, a powerful Ohio family. Whose land-rich empire grows to dramatic proportions despite a soap opera of sibling rivalry. The script could have had more depth, and it ended in a flat, incomplete manner. Far too many loose ends. Despite this flaw I give it 3 stars because Sarah Miles and Stacey Keach were good.

Murder, Inc.5 reviews
Stuart Whitman, May Britt

20th Century Fox, 2006

Chilling Crime Drama
This film is a gripping account of the crime syndicate that terrorized the nation during the waning days of the Great Depression. Filmed in black-and-white in a cinema verite style this film lays out the methodically brutal methods of the consortium that spread fear to the lawless and law abiding alike. The film focuses on the crime empire of Lepke (David J. Stewart) and how he held his grip on ...

Horton Foote's - Alone2 reviews
Hume Cronyn, James Earl Jones

Fox Lorber, 2000

do not miss this
This is a superlative drama, not to be missed. No car crashes, explosions, and what passes for "entertainment" these days. Just a beautifully rendered & tender human story. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Venom11 reviews
Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed

Blue Underground, 2003

Badly marketed on release...this is a smart thriller
The movie "Venom" is not so much a scary monster movie as it is an intelligent and involving thriller. In fact the black mamba (reportedly the worlds deadliest snake) has very little screen time and serves merely as a device to move along the plot and raise the tension level of a household held hostage by ciminals and under siege by police. The plot concerns a small band of criminals (a ...

The Big Sleep21 reviews
Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles

Lions Gate, 2002

So It's Not Bogie and Bacall; It Still Works
The American movie star Robert Mitchum headlines the 1978 English-made adaptation of Californian Raymond Chandler's famous noir novel, "The Big Sleep," generally considered an inferior remake of the 1946 American-made adaptation of the same novel, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. In any case, the plot centers on private investigator Marlowe, called to the aid of a rich family, the ...

WGBH BOSTON, 2005

As usual a smash hit.
This is a great movie. As usual P. D. James' characters (all of them) are well crafted. The actors are well cast (as usual in almost anything from England). The story grabs you and holds you until the end. The people who make decisions for American TV should be required to do at least 10 years with the BBC learning the craft they haven't a clue about.
