This is a heart-warming, FABULOUS movie! I show it to my students before teaching HAMLET. Character transformations, funny, tear-begging at the end... A MUST-SEE!!!

Shakespeare for everyone
This is my favorite version of any Shakespeare play. Gibson is pitch perfect in the role. I actually think he does a better Hamlet than Laurence Olivier! I have never seen Gibson act so well. This is a robust Hamlet that anyone can understand. Gibson makes Hamlet a man of action who is tortured by what has happened to his family. Although madness creeps up on him, he struggles to act honorably. ...

finally, usable Hamlet!
The most powerful rendition of our beloved Hamlet and the most usable format for the classroom! Teaching three different classes and being able to cue up to the spot we left off sets the most organized tone! Anyone need copies of VHS versions?

Good stuff
I have gotten slightly addicted to asian films since watching the AZN Channel (which, sadly, is no more) so I picked up some films from Amazon. This was one of them and I was very impressed by it. Visually it's stunning, the sub-titles are easy to follow. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful, romantic story
This is a must for any fan of Cameron Diaz, and it's a sister-bonding romantic story that is so well cast~ starring Shirley Maclaine as the womens' long-lost grandmother. And the fabulous Toni Collette will just tug at your heart strings. The best part of the film for me is the E.E.Cummings love poem at the end! Highly recommended for all ages. Just a little bad language and sex. The penultimate ...

...shall think themselves accurs'd they did not watch (this DVD)
"This story shall the good man teach his son; and Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, from this day to the ending of the world, but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now-a-bed shall think themselves accurs'd they ...

YES!
I believe it was Joe Orton, play write, that said, "I wish I'd written that!" upon seeing this play in England, in the 60's. I feel the same. Tom Stoppard at his hysterical best. Hamlet fans, have fun,[except for the whinny dude playing Hamlet], Gary Oldman, always fantastic. Tim Roth, perfect. Richard Dreyfuss....not so much. One,[or two], miscasts won't spoil it for you, though.

Modern Shakespeare
Great video. I used it in the classroom and showed several clips to coincide with the text. The casting director made some great choices and the director stays true to Shakespeare's story as he would want it told. The "To be or not to be" soliloquy is done beautifully--very introspective and spoken as Hamlet walks through a Blockbuster. There are a few things taken out of order, but only done ...

MANY SAY THIS IS THE CHINESE MILLENNIUM . . .
I started viewing Chinese movies when THE EMPEROR AND THE ASSASSIN, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, and, of course, HERO hit. This magnificent, majestic movie, THE BANQUET, just seals the deal. Every aspect is wonderful. It's ballet and opera and action and human nature exposed and all film elements raised to another level. Even Wm. S would be wowed. It's grace and elegance and impact. Even the wire ...

The most believable Hamlet
I teach Shakespeare classes to adults and have a personal collection of seven VHS and DVD versions of Hamlet. Campbell Scott is by far the most believable, and my students have chosen it as their favorite version. Claudius is pefect--a smiling smiling villain absolutely capable of secucing his sister-in-law and murdering his brother. The casting of Polonius, Ophelia and Laertes worked well. The ...

THREE GREAT MOMENTS... OLIVIER... SHAKESPEARE... CRITERION...
Basically, these are three great Criterion Editions boxed together - which gives it a nice sense of continuity between these films. HAMLET is, perhaps, Shakespeare most widely known and popular work. And Olivier gives it the film performance to which all others are compared. Period. And it is a great film with a striking cinematography and (naturaly) a great cast. A classic. Criterion, as ...

The Best Hamlet I've Seen
Burton (and Gielgud) have the best understanding of Hamlet that I've seen on film. I don't know why Olivier and Jacobi want to play Hamlet like he's bisexual, but it isn't right. Branagh is good, but for some scenes Gibson's interpretation is better than Branagh's. Gibson's is the most romantic Hamlet, but plays Hamlet as mostly depressed at first. Truth is, Hamlet is as mad as hell, but is ...

Greatest Hamlet
I do not say this lightly. The visual language is unforgettable: the crashing waves, the jagged cliffs, the colossal menacing castle, and amidst it the supreme elegance of Hamlet. Kozintsev is a master of black-and-white. This film has to be in black-and-white. The shades of gray need to be there: the alternately glittering and raging grays of the waves, the mysterious grays of the rock, the ...

what's high-brow?
The Texas Refugee also makes claims of "Warner going highbrow." What pray tell that this have to do with this unreleased box set? Warner is simply plowing through their own libraries and the MGM one they bought, without any specific attention to genre, age, original studio, or whether it's high-brow, low-brow or mid-brow. My rating in in "anticipation" of a fine release with expected ...
