Balanchine would love this ballet company !
With this new blu-ray release, ballet fans have another option to view what the overwhelming majority of reviewers think is one of the best ballet productions ever filmed. Though now directed by former NY City ballet dancer/choreographer Peter Boal, this Seattle based company went from a "second city"/provincial, little dance group with a small budget (and not much dance history) to a major ...
Mendelssohn, The Nazis And Me
Felix Mendelssohn
KULTUR VIDEO, 2010
Felix Mendelssohn was a passionate Christian. He was also born a Jew. This film, marking the 200th anniversary of his birth, tells the extraordinary story of what happened, generations later, both to Mendelssohn's family and to his music, when the Nazis remembered the Jewish roots of Germany's most celebrated composer. This program also examines how the influences of both Judaism and Christianity affected Mendelssohn's music, and was made by ...

A Treasure for Menuhin Fans and Violin Students
This DVD features an historic performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and much more. Virtuoso violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) plays with Anatal Dorati conducting a symphony orchestra comprised of some of the finest studio musicians in Hollywood, who played the big film scores of the era. Recorded in the Charlie Chaplin Studios in the Fall of 1947, the footage shows some age in the ...

Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Swan Lake...step aside, there's a new Queen on the throne!
This beautiful Balanchine-choreographed story ballet doesn't get performed as much as it should because the heirs and executors of the Balanchine Trust will only grant permission to those ballet companies that are willing to keep true to Balanchine's steps as he created them. If I'm not mistaken, distribution rights to the original 1967 ballet-film with Suzanne Farrell have never been sold. In ...

Riccardo Chailly's Inaugural Concert as Conductor of the Gewandhaus
It only took four months from the time of this concert on 2 September 2005 for it to find its way onto a DVD distributed worldwide. This is close to a record for a classical music DVD. But the concert does represent a momentous event in its part of the world and for those of us elsewhere who care about such things. Riccardo Chailly had been conductor of the famed Royal Concertbegouw in Amsterdam ...

I bought several titles by this company and wanted to add this recording to my collection. After reading review below I contacted the label owner via Blu ray forum about compatibility. Just buy this titles directly from Amazon to be sure you got updated version. But even if you got an older copy they will replace it free of charge. this is the e-mail address in my comment below.

A gentleman of the violin!
The egregious presence of Artur Grumiaux as well as his expressive tune, velvet phrasing and captivating temperament made of him one of the most fascinating legends of the violin. His elegance and aristocratic profile was always under the composer's service and never as a personal attribute. This invaluable DVD captures with all his vigor, force and mercurial energy, his golden display of ...

Still going strong
This documentary just won't let you go. The human interest is interesting and the music is lovely -- but what a knockout historical punch! The Mendelssohn was the first of all glee clubs in America and for over a century the hottest ticket in town. Few people today realize what it was like back when when amateur performances not only dominated social life, but the amateur musicians had to be ...

Three Titans--Athletic, Authoritative, Incomparable
These three superstars performed and recorded together in various combinations and permutations from the 1930s into the 1960s, and it was during their joint appearances at the Ravinia Festival in the fifties that some whizzbang reporter headlined them as "The Million Dollar Trio." Their performances here, however, are solo turns. Decked out in a white dinner jacket, Heifetz recorded his three ...

Excellent footage of butterfly/moth metamorphosis!
Very cool close up shots of caterpillars spinning cocoons and through time-lapse photography, showing the process of evolving into mature butterflies and moths! I am not sure how this was done but it is wonderful and educational. Great visual aid for parents to share with children learning about metamorphosis.

Superb "Scottish" performance
I purchased this DVD for Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 3, "Scottish", and I am glad I did. Picture quality and sound are very good, considering the performance was recorded in 1977. I have listened to several performances of the "Scottish" on CD, with mixed feelings. Luckily, the performance of the VP on this DVD is at the right speed, at least for my taste, setting the right atmosphere for this ...
