The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (Home Use)

Good video for beggining musicians and composers.
This film is good for hearing and seeing the instruments piece by piece and all at once. I am studying composition and this is helping me hear the quality of each instrument and how they work in the orchestra. Also good music. some parts are cheesy but overall it is a good educational film on each part of the orchestra.

what a fun little film!
The appeal to purchase this unknown (to me) title was the real Glenn Miller and his band. And seeing him in this movie would have been enough. But the numbers are fun to watch and the music's a treat. The real-deal sax/singer, drummer, and others makes it more interesting. Cesar Romero's playful banter with the honest butch George Montgomery (never seen him before) is a good time. George ...

intimate, inspiring, beautifully crafted
After watching this beautiful film, it's impossible to hear recorded classical music and dismiss it as pleasant aural wallpaper. Now there's a musician and a passion behind every piece, a community of real lives behind every note, and professional orchestra players who also make art, run marathons, and fiddle in pubs. You don't have to love classical music to watch this movie, but it's certain ...

A joyful prolegomenon for all time art
Orchestra is a very good work about how human genius can produce perfection and order from the caos and diversity. Focus and discipline in order to produce art. How that is possible? How to make it? How to understand it? It's a very simple and also quite sofisticated way to bring to everyone the coprehension of it. Amusing and enlightening to all publics.
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra: 70th Anniversary Concert

Brilliant Barenboim amazing Brahms
Daniel Barenboim shows why he is the greatest pianist of his generation--perhaps (who knows?) of any generation. If music is, above all, about the throb of our hearts and the awe we feel with the sense of agony and innocence expressed in this Mehta/Berenboim interpretation of Brahms' Piano Concerto Number I, then this finale will blow you away. The 70th Anniversary Concert is one of the great ...

ELO...ya gotta love em
dvd covers a great balance of their earlier hits...and the entries from ZOOM hit the mark as well..the 5.1 is done well...remember, just because the dvd states it is in 5.1, it does NOT mean that it is mixed well...in a lot of cases, especially with older concerts, the stereo sounds better...not in this one...a great buy..

Meet the Orchestra is great!!!
We first borrowed Meet the Orchestra for our grandson's visit when he was 18 mo. old and he was "glued" to it from beginning to end. We purchased it for his next visit two months later and he was again fasinated by it. It teaches each instrument by name and sound as they methodically work their way through the sections of the orchestra. Animated characters, children and adults are each shown ...

Wow, what synergy!
I have always liked Styx, but thought many of their songs were a little too pop and shallow(Come Fly Away?). After seeing this concert, I've become a huge fan. This is a band that has just gotten better over the years. Tommy Shaw and the other new players add talent and excitement to the band that I didn't see in the early days(I'm an old fart!) They are comfortable enough to do some cover ...

Just the Right Number of Notes
There's a scene in Amadeus where Emperor Joseph II criticizes Mozart's work for having "too many notes." Mozart defends that he believes his work has just the right number of notes, not too many or too few. One gets the sense that had Emperor Joseph heard Chris Botti's performance on this DVD he would have complained it had too few. Even Botti comments on a bonus interview that he is not an ...

Amazing
This one is by far the best PH DVD yet. The Danish symphony and choir add tremendous depth to the already great music. The audio fidelity is outstanding, offering both DTS and Dolby 5.1 (Dolby is better) and the video quality is crisp with great production qualities. Any serious music fan should have this one in the collection. For the PH fan - it is a religious experience.

5 stars only? how about 10 or 100? Can you even "measure" k.d. lang's music using such a mundane yardstick?
"Top NOTCH Production" -- absolutely except, that would still be an understatement. ;) You can only put k.d. lang on the same line and in the realms and higher planes of Heaven - utterly immeasurable in mere human perspectives. ;) The sound, band and orchestra was also the best I've heard in my years of music connoisseurship (humbling, may I add). Do NOT miss this one.

Amazing!
This concert is up there with the best. Could the video and audio be just a little bit better? Sure they could, but the producers had no idea what they were in for with this show... otherwise they would have gladly thrown a LOT more budget at it. Suffice to say, the performance is what knocks this one out of the ballpark. As another reviewer said, Brian Setzer is up there with the greats. He's ...

A Very Enjoyable Evening's Entertainment
Acis and Galatea recounts the myth of the doomed love between the shepherd Acis and the nymph Galatea, based on a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Although Handel did not conceive Acis and Galatea as a fully staged production with action, it takes well to the stage. In this respect, it joins other Handel works (such as Theodora, Hercules, and Semele) that have adapted well to a dramatic ...

Excellent concert video
Having purchased the original Live at Wembley video many years ago that had the hit songs overdubbed by CBS Records or whomever, this DVD is a treat. Definitely worth the price. It's all live as it was at the concert, the sound is superb and it's like you're there. Jeff Lynne did a wonderful job remastering this and is a treat for the eyes and ears. I highly recommend this DVD to all ELO ...
