The real deal
I cannot add anymore to the praise that others have heaped on this series. On a personal note, I was brought up thinking that Sidney Toler was the definitive Charlie Chan, because that's what I see on Saturday afternoon TV. I wasn't sure that I would like Warner Oland. No problem. Each actor brings something slightly different to the role, and despite my first preferring Sidney Toler, I ...

Hacked up by the studio what remains is still a classic film noir - more proof of Welles' genius
Michael O'Hara (Orson Welles, with a very soft Irish brogue), an out of work seaman, has a brief encounter in Central Park with Elsa `Rosalie' Bannister (Rita Hayworth, with short blonde hair!). Later that evening they meet again when O'Hara rescues her from a mugging in progress. In gratitude, her crippled husband, Arthur Bannister (Everett Sloane) seeks out O'Hara and offers him a job as a ...

On His Blindness
The final Merchant Ivory production "The White Countess" is set in Shanghai in the 1930's. The brilliant Kazuo Ishiguro (REMAINS OF THE DAY, NEVER LET ME GO, etc.,) wrote the screen play. Ralph Finnes (Jackson) and Nathasha Richardson (Countess Sofia Belinskya) head up a cast that includes the rest of Richardson's natural family as her film family, her aunt Lynn Redgrave (her mother-in-law Olga ...

Good, Solid Entertainment
From the diversity of ratings here, it is obvious that for most Charlie Chan movie fans, the Toler Chans are an acquired taste. I used to prefer the Oland Chans; however, over the years I have come to appreciate how entertaining the Toler Chans are. While Toler undoubtedly does less "analytical detecting" in these films than Oland in the earlier ones, the pace and plot of the later films have ...

Shanghai Noon
The DVD was a gift for my sister and the first DVD sent to her was defective. Half way through playing, it stopped and went back to the beginning. I contacted Amazon and the DVD was replaced free of charge. I was very very pleased with how the whole thing was handled. Amazon even reimbursed me for the shipping I paid to return the first DVD. The second DVD plays fine and my sister is very ...

"You still remember me?" . . . "Bunny, you are my every other memory"
"Shanghai Kiss" is a refreshing new comedy about a first generation 28 year old Chinese-American man (played remarkably by Ken Leung) living in Los Angeles, California. He moves to LA from New York to become an actor, but the school of the 'hard knocks' proves to be quite difficult for him. He struggles and eeks out a living somehow, but painfully relies on money sent to him by his alcoholic ...

All-star cast in sprawling kung fu comedy
SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1986), one of the greatest action comedies of Hong Kong cinema, is better known as MILLIONAIRES' EXPRESS and is finally out in a beautifully mastered DVD edition for U.S. fans under this alternate title (not to be confused with the Marlene Dietrich classic of the same name). Sammo Hung (EASTERN CONDORS) both stars and directs and his frequent partner, Yuen Biao (PRODIGAL SON), ...

A must see!
I saw this film initially at the SF Jewish Film Festival. Before this initial viewing I was unfamiliar with the imigration of Jews to Shanghai during the holocust. The film is informative and beautifully made. A must see for WWII, hollocast and documentary film junkies.

A majuscule film and probably the most relevant of that year!
A country bumpkin cousin in the 1930s, is called to Shanghai to wait on the mobster's girlfriend. And we suspect, a very hazardous love affair will emerge inside this violent underworld of power, corruption and falseness, where nothing lasts forever. One of the most visceral and complex films of this brilliant director, one of the top ten of the world.

Sexual Freedom = Artistic/Literary Expression
The thesis of this documentary is that the extraordinary sexual freedom and license in the 1920-1930's in three cities (Berlin, Paris, & Shanghai) became a draw to the great artists and literary figures of Europe. It is without doubt that Paris and Berlin did generate a renaissance of artistic creation during these decades but there were other factors such as the flood of Russians from the ...

This will not be everyone's cup of green tea.If you are expecting CROUCHING...HIDDEN etc, go elsewhere. If you enjoy deliberate and fixated camera work that moves as slowly and intriquitely as the graceful, quiet movements of the girls of the brothels themselves, then read on, watch the film and learn! This film shows us brothel life in the upscale,British-district "Flower Houses" of 1880's ...
