Red Violin - Meridian Collection (Remastered - WS)4 reviews
Carlo Cecchi, Jason Flemyng

Lionsgate, 2008

Meridan Collection--Superb transfer to DVD
This review pertains to the June 2008 release of the Meridian Collection remastering of "The Red Violin". This well-crafted saga of how a priceless, one-of-a-kind violin is passed onto various owners over time and in several countries, has been beautifully remastered. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and enchanced for widescreen TVs (16x9 aspect ratio, no black bars--the picture fills the ...

A Piano Evening with Martha Argerich [DVD Video]5 reviews

Tdk DVD Video, 2007

Why she is the greatest of the age, and perhaps of all time...
This is a remarkable DVD, featuring Martha Argerich--arguably the greatest pianist of all time--and two rising musical names: Renaud Capucon, violin, and Gautier Capucon, cello. While the brothers Capucon deliver beautiful and nuanced playing, this is really Argerich's show (as usual). I am constantly amazed at how she manages to elevate the playing of those around her to new heights. She simply ...

The ABCs of Violin for the Intermediate Player2 reviews
Janice Tucker Rhoda, Yuki Beppu

Carl Fischer/Blink Music, 2008

Wonderful Instructional DVD
After seeing the 1st ABCs of Strings DVD, I was anxious to see this next one. I was NOT disappointed. The violin playing by the little girl was great as was the piano accompaniment by the young man. It even showed restringing the violin. Ms Rhoda always does a fine job of explaining and showing things. I can't wait for the DVD about the cello and bass.

The Violin9 reviews
Angel Tavira Maldonado, Gerardo Taracena

Film Movement, 2008

Not a movie but a true film.
[Originally a comment to a previous review.] What this film portrays is the ruthlessness of profit-driven policy, and the struggle to maintain some semblance of dignity and cultural history. This is well summarized by the tale about Gods of creation, told by the grandfather to his inquisitive grandchild. Done in black and white, relatively little dialogue and masterful cinematography, the film ...

Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman

EMI Classics, 2003

Freude, freude!
A beautifully performed and exquisitely videoed performance of the Triple and Choral Fantasy. Orchestral and choral fans alike will be awed by the sheer beauty of this music. And what better orchestra to perform these masterpieces than the Berlin Philharmonic?

Itzhak Perlman: Beethoven/Brahms Violin Concertos10 reviews
Beethoven, Brahms

EMI Classics, 2005

Great recording
It was wonderful to feel a part of the performance, the interplay between Perlman, Barenboim, and the Berlin Phil was beautifully recorded so that the viewer can feel the drama of this great work from the inside

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - God Is in the House19 reviews
Nick Cave

Mute U.S., 2003

Someday he'll come out ... God Is In the House
Perhaps the greatest example of a true showman. Nick Cave stomps around stage pointing and screaming at the audience one minute, then gently caressing the mic the next. He's a charismatic cross between an early 1950's crooner and a mid-1970's minister - somehow he makes it all accessible and brilliant. For those into masochistic entertainment, please apply here. It's lyrically brutal music, but ...

The Red Violin282 reviews
Carlo Cecchi, Jean-Luc Bideau

Lions Gate, 2003

pay no attention to the critics ...
I LOVE this movie. I barely get by living on disability but I scraped together enough money to buy this movie. I've gotten several people to watch this movie and everyone of them loved it. The rest of the reviewers have given you the story line so I'll just say this: The little boy in the orphanage is amazing. I wish I knew more about this little actor. Jason Flemying is mind blowingly sexy ...

Herbert Von Karajan - His Legacy for Home Video: Ludwig Van Beethoven - Violin Concerto12 reviews
Beethoven, Karajan

Sony, 1999

I thought Heaven was open.
I played my new DVD-copy in as soon as I got it. After a few minutes of listening, I though Heaven was open and the flood-gate had been demolished. I have never heard anything like that and it moved me so deep. I feel that my whole being has been transformed to the next unknown dimension. Even though I have listened Beethoven's Violin Concerto since 1981; that was 24 years ago. It is averaged ...

Spotworks, 2004

Just what I was looking for
I wanted something to add mood to my home and this DVD does just that. The visuals are very soothing. If you like kaleidoscopes, you'll like this. I have a Phillips Ambilight TV so the colors glow onto the wall. Sometimes I have the music on low but usually I turn the TV volume all the way down.

Israel Philharmonic Orchestra: 70th Anniversary Concert3 reviews

Euroarts, 2007

Brilliant Barenboim amazing Brahms
Daniel Barenboim shows why he is the greatest pianist of his generation--perhaps (who knows?) of any generation. If music is, above all, about the throb of our hearts and the awe we feel with the sense of agony and innocence expressed in this Mehta/Berenboim interpretation of Brahms' Piano Concerto Number I, then this finale will blow you away. The 70th Anniversary Concert is one of the great ...

Choreography By Balanchine / Tzigane, Andante from Divertimento No 15, The Four Temperaments, Selections from ...8 reviews
New York City Ballet, George Balanchine

Nonesuch, 2004

a dream come true
PBS: Great Performances > Dance In America > Choreography by Balanchine >: Parts 1 and 2 of 4 (1977) I saw some of this series on TV back in 1978. I was awe-striken. I was a twenty-year fan of Stravinsky's music already and impressed by the composer's high opinion of this dance master (Mr. B). Seeing it for myself (being unable to go to NYC and actually attend) was totally thrilling and ...

Anne-Sophie Mutter - Mozart Violin Concertos, Sonatas, and Trios3 reviews
Anne-Sophie Mutter, Mozart

Deutsche Grammophon, 2007

Mutter...always good
I am a violin player learning technique. Anne's technique is superb. It is a joy to watch her play because each bow stroke seems to be beautifully designed for each note she is playing. The camera work is good.
