The forgotten epic
It is exciting to find this available for US distribution as it was previously only found in other region code DVD offerings, you had to have a non-region player to see it. The photography is grand and the score works. The opening and closing titles are wonderful bookends and the scenes in the King's kraal are magnificent. There are scenes missing from the original release so this is not a ...

May 2003 MGM release: Excellent anamorphic transfer to DVD
I almost did not purchase a DVD of "Zulu" based on the mostly negative comments (by other Amazon reviewers) regarding the quality of the video and sound transfer to DVD. Well, I took a chance--and wow! The transfer to DVD is excellent! The format is anamorphic widescreen, enhanced for 16 x 9 large-screen, high-definition TVs. My comments are based on the Region 1, May 2003 DVD release by MGM. ...

Best battle sequences ever filmed
The Charge of the Scots Grays is boggling, even recreates the scene from the painting. (one myth asserts that the bits were removed from the horses' mouths so that they couldn't be stopped. No creditable horseman would do that)The Grays blew out their horses in that charge while the French Lancers just sat there waiting for them to come. Thus, fresh French horses and staggering Grays. In the ...

Every Republican should see this Film
This is an interesting allegorical tale. David Hemmings, in one of his best roles, represents the instinctual nature of the ordinary man with no greater aspirations other than to enjoy the pleasures of life. As political and military figures "wave the flag" to the beat of their own political persuasions, loyalty unto death to those political persuasions is the only proof of loyalty to one's ...

Clash on the Nile
Based on a true story from the 1880s, Khartoum tells of the clash between General Charles George Gordon and "The Madhi". The movie isn't always true to history. For instance, the two men never apparently met face to face and the desert campaigns are oversimplyfied. That said, the film is magnificent. There are no less than five large battle scenes from a truely epic clash near the beginning ...

Crystal Clear
It's amazing that these movies have never hit dvd before!!! They have crystal clear sound and picture with a documentary by Robert Osbourne. The thing that caught my attention upon this product was the pre-release version of Baby Face. Those few minutes of film that were cut are sooo essential. If you like movies from the early 30's then you'll LOVE this collection. I reccomend it!

One of my absolute favorite movies...
This movie was made a bit before my time (nine years before, to be exact), and I'd never even heard of it until my dad requested it as a Christmas present one year, saying it was an old favorite of his. I found it for him and figured, well, Michael Caine and Omar Sharif--it has to be pretty good, right? I watched it with him, and I was absolutely blown away. It's now one of my favorite movies ...

History the way it should be taught in schools
In my opinion this is one of the best things Richard Harris ever did, and that is saying a lot. This area of English history is not as well known by Americans as Queen Elizabeth R, Henry the VIII, and others, but it is a part of English history that is taught well in this masterpiece of acting and storytelling. Alex Guinness is excellent as the King who just didn't get it. Don't miss this.

Monumental, Oustanding Film
If "War and Peace" is arguably the greatest novel ever written, this has to be one of the most outstanding films ever made. The grandeur, the scope, the almost unimaginable battle scenes, the thousands of soldiers and horses and cannons, the tender love scenes and most of all, the depth of the Russian soul which,in the end, was the victor over the invading Grand Armee of Napoleon. This six-hour ...

One of Steiger's most underappreciated roles in an epic film...
In the tradition of the cinematic epics like Kubrick's "Spartacus" and Mann's "Fall of the Roman Empire," Bondarchuk's "Waterloo" succeeds in depicting Napoleon's desperate and final bid for power and glory. Steiger, no stranger to roles that have consistently challenged his acting ability, is quite good as the deposed French emperor who narrowly lost his final battle. Orson Welles' appearance ...

Vivien Leigh...so much more than just Scarlett
I watched this movie for the first time just a few days ago, and it has made such an impact on me, mostly because of the bravura performance by Vivien Leigh. She is so much more than the two excellent performances she is mostly knwn for ('Gone with the wind' and 'A Streetcar named desire') In Waterloo Bridge, her performance of Myra, the dancer turned prostitute, left me haunted. This is the ...

Rapturous battle-followings and stuff
There's no copyright year anywhere on the DVD case or box, but the end of the documentaries I think label it as being from 1993 or so, and yet the video quality looks horrifying by today's standards, and by the standards of 1993, it would be considered bad itself. It looks something like the early to mid-70s on a VHS recorded off a TV. So hold no bias against poorly aged footage not anywhere ...

The Return of the Emperor
Who better to portray Napolean Bonaparte than actor Rod Steiger. The start of the movie sets the precedence of the film. Other scenes could have just as well been used with cameras aimed at Napolean's hands crossed behind his back as he faces his former troops after fleeing from the island of Elba. This movie does not begin at the start of Napolean's life nor does it show his early rise to ...

The Finale of an Adventure Epic
I admit to being a die hard fan of the _Sharpe_ film series so I see this not as an individual movie but the last chapter, you might say, of a well loved video book. Without trying to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it, there is joy, resolution, and great sadness as many of the characters' stories, not just Sharpe's, come to a conclusion.

No Mention of the ABBA Hit
I always thought Waterloo was Napoleon's main downfall, but this documentary corrects me and informed me that it was his unsuccessful comeback. They show images of the defeated emperor heavily in the beginning and somewhat in the ending. However, this focuses greatly on the tactics of war. It spoke about artillery and military clothes. The way football plays are written is a lot of how the ...
