Growing Up In Dogtown
Dogtown and Z-Boys brought back the feel and culture of Venice and Santa Monica in the 70's. I was born and raised there and remember hearing about many of the skaters depicted in Dogtown. Especially Tony Alva, everyone knew who he was. One night while at a teenage party in Malibu he managed to offend one of my girlfriends who promptly pushed him into the pool. This movie brought back so ...

Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys!3 reviews
Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward

20th Century Fox, 2007

Great comedy with vibrant Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman and Joan Collins
This satiric look at 50s life in Putnam's Landing, NY is hilarious. A rocket trip to outer space, a reenactment of the Puritan Landings, Joan Collins trying to seduce Paul Newman, and you know he wantes Joan at times, many times. Joanne Woodward thowing TV Dinners into her wall oven for her children who are hollering all the time in front of a Sylvania TV with that awful white glow around it. On ...

Perfect coming-of-age story!
"Crazy" is a coming-of-age story about a young man dealing with his sexuality. This film is a touching look at a boy desperate to keep the love of his father but struggling with the emotions inside himself that threaten to alienate him from the father he loves. Zac is the fourth son in a devout Catholic family. From the beginning of his life, he is different from his brothers---starting ...

Dogtown & Z Boys / Grateful Dawg
Columbia 2 Pak

Sony Pictures, 2002

Dogtown and Z-Boys In the early 1970s, a group of young surfers from a tough neighborhood south of Santa Monica took up skateboards and offhandedly changed the world. At least it appears so after watching Dogtown and Z-Boys , a documentary about how twelve "Z-Boys" (including one girl) resuscitated a dead sport and created a lifestyle that spread infectiously to become a worldwide counterculture phenomenon, namely high-flying "vert" (i.e. ...

Lords of Dogtown, Dogtown & Z-Boys

Sony Pictures, 2005

LORDS OF DOGTOWN: LORDS OF DOGTOWN tells the radical true story behind three teenage surfers from Venice Beach, California, who took skateboarding to the extreme and changed the world of sports forever. Stacy Peralta (John Robinson, Elephant), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk, Raising Victor Vargas) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch, The Girl Next Door) are the Z-Boys, a bunch of nobodies until they create a new style of skateboarding that becomes a worldwide ...

Where I Grew Up
Great movie. Brings backs memories of growing up in the Venice area. I grew up there in the 40's and 50's, on the canals, before skate boards. I still miss Venice, but could not afford to live in the house I grew up in now.

Predictable...But Thoroughly Enjoyable!!
I really enjoyed this movie and although the storyline has been done before it was a well acted movie! I laughed in places and just sat back and really loved it! I bought it for me 11 year old daughter but I must say I liked it just as much as she did. She laughed and laughed at the closing sequence in the credits. Would recommend it to all!

Pleasant.
Completely different story than the book by Louisa May Alcott. It is not a great movie, but I enjoyed it. The school is quaint, on a farm. The story is really about a boy's father, a struggling and charming swindler, in the likes of Long John Silver, searching for new schemes to swindle money. His son, who goes off to school, is a bit embarrassed by his father's career. Nothing exceptional, ...

Beautiful and Sad. I Cried for Africa.
Every once in a while a film comes along that really says something that matters. Recommended from another writer's book on poverty and social change along with BLOOD DIAMOND and TSOTSI, I picked up the film. It employed purely African actors and film crews, besides the director, out of a purposeful effort. BEAT THE DRUM ended up being one of those films that matters. Enjoy. Set in southern ...

One of the best of the Mumblecore movement
Beyond the work of Andrew Bujalski ("Funny Ha Ha", "Mutual Appreciation")I've been disappointed with a lot of the Mumblecore films I've seen. Whereas Bujalski's films utilize tight scripts, interesting cinematography, careful dialogue and interesting characters studies, it seems that many of his contemporaries rely too heavily on the shaky handheld and quirky actors to make their films and ...
