Inspiring

If you're looking for the inspiration to live a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle, this is the book to read. As soon as I finished the last page, I wanted to turn back to the beginning and read it all over again! It is beautifully written and makes you really think about the way you live your life. This is NOT a diet book, but a way of changing your attitude towards food and pleasure. It is full of recipes, philosophy, and childhood anecdotes that will leave you pining to live the life of a French woman. And, not to toot my own horn, but I lost 4 pounds in two weeks after I read this book!

Smart

Fabulous advice! This is not a diet book; it's a book explaining how to live your life and be thin, but smartly. I've given this book out as gifts, and it's always well-received.

Real Food, Small Pleasures

I visited France for a vacation during my third year of college. At that time, I was obsessed with low-fat foods, the gym, and calories. As a student on a budget, my meals in France consisted of what was inexpensive and readily available. Cheese and bread. Crepes, lots and lots of crepes, from street vendors. Fresh salads. I didn't go to the gym and walked everywhere. When I returned home, anxious that full-fat cheese and chocolate had done irreparable damage, I found, as many women did, that I had lost weight. Just a pound or two, but enough to make me question my typically spartan diet at home.

This is a great book in that it is not a diet book, but a lifestyle book. It won't teach you how to lose 10 pounds in a week. What it will do is give you tools to make small changes that can produce big results. Women in the US, including me for a large portion of my life, go through the roller-coaster of eating. Denial of food, hours at the gym, then huge meals at restaurants or big bags of chips, and then back to the starvation and gym.

I think that every woman that enjoys this book should check out Nina Planck's book Real Food, which I finished right before reading this book. French Women Don't Get Fat teaches about portion control and enjoyment of fresh foods. Real Food explains WHY real food (as close to mother nature as possible), not artificial, packaged food and low-fat alternatives, is healthier and more satisfying. In other words, olive oil and butter instead of margarine and corn oil. Raw whole milk and cheese instead of skim milk and processed cheese slices. The two books espouse similar ideas, but from different angles (Nina Planck is as American as apple pie-- raised on a farm eating butter, in-season vegetables, liver, etc.)

Eating well is not a French idea per se, it's how Americans used to eat too before the invention of 64oz. soda pops and fast food restaurants. So all those who are turned off by this book because it's written by a French woman-- these are universal ideas that you can incorporate into your own life.

Oh, and I bought a yogurt maker as recommended in French Women Don't Get Fat. It's easy to make your own yogurt, even without a thermometer. And, for $12, I figure I'm ahead (I bought the Salton brand, really inexpensive).

I've lost 4 pounds... Please read my review!

Everyone has to find what works for them- and I have been looking a long time- I love to eat (my mother doesn't- she controls her weight by eating no sugar or fat- she hasn't eaten pie for over 25 years!). I definately can't do that and have lived with guilt my entire life because I can't say no to sugar. I have felt like I'm in prison in my body because I can't lose weight. I went on the leek fast last week and have done exactly what her book says. I have lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks and now weigh 128. I feel like crying because I am so greatful after failing and failing. I read her book on a daily basis to keep motivated and make sure I am following her advice. What I like about it is that she is teaching us something that has worked for her whole country, not just one person. Good luck to you!

French Women Don't Get Fat

This book shows you how the French people think about food, and how they have a different lifestyle to the North American view on food.
Excellent book, and very well written.
