Loved it!

I loved the style and lay-out of the book, I liked the simple way it was written, and most of all, I love how it doesn't make a big production out of creating art journals, or make it sound completely pompous and self-gratifying. It's a simple, basic look at how to create some wonderful memories to pass on to friends, family or just keep for yourself.

My husband even read it and loved it! That's saying quite a bit as he's a real man's man!

Excellent book, especially for those who don't know where to begin!

Faster, Better, Wiser Journaling

As a graphic designer, I know how to mix words and art....when someone is paying me to talk about their products. This book helped me talk about ME. It reminded me that journaling doesn't have to take a long time and doesn't require a dimly-lit "studio" with scented candles to conjure a special mood. I remembered how to tell my story with a few words, because less is more.

The authors have a sense of humor and style. They aren't asking anyone to copy their style or read their sob stories, which I really liked. They showed me how to colorize and texturize my own sob story, if I want to, and that the story of each moment of a day is worthy of chronicling. I got stuck before, waiting for some miraculous thought to strike. Then, I had to wait for a brilliant, artistic way to show that thought. Now, I get that a lot of my random, funny thoughts are exactly what I should be journaling. They are what make me up.

In the past, when I could not journal as quickly as I thought of things, I got frustrated. This book has shown me ways to journal my ideas quickly and effectively. I am frankly baffled by the negative reviews. My wife does scrapbooking and this isn't it (though scrapbooking is great). This is about self-expression, and the authors have several thought provoking journal pages that use 10 words or less. If that scares some people into negativity, don't let it scare you. The beauty is in the simplicity, and I (like other reviewers, I see) was relieved to get away from the pomposity. Visual Chronicles has given me adaptable, portable, easy ways to journal whatever comes into my mind. From this book, I have become better at creating, period.

There are no rules for journaling or art

This is a fun, low-pressure style of getting started with keeping journals. Many altered book and altered journal material published is complex, done by real artists who take a lot of time with it, and can be a bit intimidating - although certainly beautiful and inspiring. These sisters are not concerned with sophisticated art (in this book - one sister is actually an artist.) It more about making the process accessible. Their journal pages are easy to make, very simply decorated, and fun to look at. This book focuses on helping people get started with their journaling, and they offer a lot of suggestions of topics to make it easy. The book is written with humor and a friendly tone. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
