Enchanting!!!

I have enjoyed these awesome recordings for years and are looking forward to getting them this CHristmas. Focus on the family portrays these timeless tales to perfection, adding fantastic sound effects, and even an underscore to an amazing drama production.
When I first found these stories, I was a fan of "The Lion the WItch and the Wardrobe", however, I knew little else of the rest series. These recordings offered the perfect opportunity to set my curious mind at rest.

The Magician's Nephew: THe technical first of the series (though it was published sixth), this story tells the beginning or the Genesis of Narnia, when Aslan the lion first created it. It also tells how the white witch first came to this country by the mistake of two school children and some magic rings.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe: Now this is the classic we all know (or should know) and love. RIght know, this story has recently opened in theatres and has done a decent job for itself, though I have a few complaints regarding the director. This classic tale is an excellent parallel to one of the best stories in the BIble and even today, continues to share its incredible morals and treasures with the world.

The HOrse and HIs BOy: NOw this particular book was a complete stranger to me the first time I listened to it. For those of you not at all familiar with the series, this is an excellent way to start (though perhaps with one of the previous books). Well dramatized and expertly told, this is now one of my favorites.

Prince Caspian: FOr those of you who have seen the cheaply done British versions (No offense intended), you might think there is not much to this story as the video left a great deal out. I was in a similar frame of mind until I listened to this story. Once again, a stunning performance, all the actors are back!

THe Voyage of the Dawn Treader: THis is probably one of my three favorites and tied for first place as the best of these particular dramas. Prince Caspian is leading a sea voyage to the end of the world in attempts to see Aslan and his country. THis is quite different from many of the stories we are used to, full of mystery and surprises. I loved the actor who played Eustice, he was perfect!

The Silver Chair: Probably my favorite of the Narnia stories, though it is difficult to choose, The silver Chair tells of the capture of the young son of Caspian and how Eustice and his new friend Jill come to rescue him. We are introduced to a seemingly attractive race of giants, another witch, and a curious creature called a marshwiggle. Excellent storytelling, brilliant storyline; C.S Lewis is a master!!!

The Last Battle: THe end has come and the sun is setting on Narnia. THe country is being invaded by the savage races from the south and Narnia is beginning to crumble, despite the heroic efforts of the last king Tirian and his unicorn, Jewel. This tale is sad and sometimes difficult to listen to, as the world we have loved so dearly is comming to an end. However, as Aslans said, this is only a shadow of what truely exists and do not mourn for what is lost.

OVerall, excellent performances, classic morals and tales. A hundred stars for this amazing collection!!!!

A Literary Fan Gives Two Thumbs Up

I was given this album of audio CDs as a gift by a dear friend, and let me tell you, it is a marvelous gift. I do so love listening to these stories, and they are not only well-acted, but also extremely well-produced. Listening to these CDs is an experience better than any movie could hope to be, as "theatre of the mind" brings Narnia to life once more. The CDs make for fabulous listening while travelling as well. You can tell these CDs were a labor of love. Kudos to the producers!

The Chronicles of Narnia has long been a favorite of adults and youngsters alike, and this beautiful production of all seven of Lewis' installments truly brings the story to life. As with the recent film version of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, there are some small changes that were made to accommodate the medium. There are also a (very) few moments when the voicing doesn't seem quite right, but overall, it is a dynamic and exciting presentation of these literary classics.

Remember the awe Diggory and Polly felt while flying atop Fledge, taking in the whole valley of Narnia for the first time? One has a similar experience when taking in this audio production. What I love most about listening to the story is that I can hear the action much faster that I could ever read all of it. Rather than skimming over pages in an attempt to quickly get to the "good parts," the audio version delivers a wonderful momentum that allows the listener to gain a new perspective of the overall story. Rather than having seven very distinct tales, one is able to see the overarching themes and ideas that Lewis worked so hard to incorporate. The continuity between each story is preserved in a new way (perhaps a way Lewis didn't intend or even dream was possible), and it's impossible not to be completely awestruck by its beauty.

While Aslan's voice seems a bit off somehow (he talks to slowly and without the majesty I expected), the whole of the product is simply spectacular. Read these books, see the recent film, and listen to this radio theatre production. Narnia is a country not to be missed!
