Enjoyable, Keeps your attention

I really enjoyed this book it wasnt a long book it only took me about a day to read but I really enjoyed the photographs it showed pretty well what it was like to be in Afganistan and there were lots of them. However I would have liked it to have a little more discriptiveness of battles in which he participated as well as more depth in other aspects of his life during this period.

Vladislav Tamarov abruptly learned about war.

Entering the military much as I did, as a teenager during wartime, he quickly learned about the challenges and tragedy of war. Many of the things he wrote about, I could identify with, although I did not experience near the amount of hardship he did in the field. His narrative is personal in that he relates his experiences and writes about not only the campaign but also his fellow soldiers-both good and bad. He had the same feelings about his commander as I had and later realized that the commander was tough on him and his fellow soldiers because he wanted them to survive. Every armed force has the types of individuals he describes in this book, how they interact and the dangers they faced as well as the heartbreak, anguish, and frustration of military life. This book is outstanding and I recommend it to anyone interested in an honest, unbiased account of a young soldier's experiences in a war he was sent to fight through no fault of his own.

Photographic essay

This is a photographic essay with descriptions of what was happening during each photo, and I guess 20 pages of text interspersed throughout the book. Most of the writing is made up of memory snapshots of the author and what is going on inside his head, kind of surreal. The author is involved with networking with other veterans, including American Vietnam veterans, and he is trying to help himself and other vets deal with the psychological trauma from the war, and that's what the book is really about. It serves that purpose well. It is not a typical eye-witness account of battle, and would appear very disjointed from that perspective; the book has virtually no analysis of the war or explanations of strategy and tactics.

Absolutely wonderful

It is more than just a photography book. It had feeling. emotion, and a sense of being in this war we are facing. Thank you Mr. Tamarov

A must have book in every home

I had tears in my eyes while reading this book. This is not about a professionally trained journalist going into Afghanistan to write a book. This was about a man who did what he had to do to survive 621 days and use photography as his life saver. Here was a kid, a very young man, 18, going into battle to fight for his country. His journal of his 621 days was an eye opener beyond belief. I have been trying to find a copy for weeks. My friend had this book and I would do almost anything to own my own copy.
