It Works. Finally...she sleeps!!

This book was recommended to us by our pediatrician. Kim West truly knows her stuff. My first daughter was breastfed and co-slept with us until she was 2. Up until she was 9 months, she napped exclusively on top of Mommy! We used the "sleep lady shuffle" to nap train her successfully. When the time came for her to sleep in her own room at night, we "shuffled" her easily. She did cry, but we were in the room with her, assuring her comfort and safety. Also extremely helpful to new parents are the guides on age-appropriate routines from birth to preschool. I would definetly recommend this book as a baby shower gift, or a new parents gift to themselves.

Sleep solutions that work!

If you're looking for sleep solutions that work for your child and leave you feeling good too, this is the book for you. Ms. West's book is easy to follow, and, particularly in the case of our first-born son, who had slept in the family bed from Day 1, it worked like a dream.

As predicted in the book, three weeks was all it took to get him out of our bed and sleeping on his own, in his own room. In the past, we had "Ferberized" him, eventually letting him cry it out upstairs in his room while we cringed downstairs until he fell asleep.

Her methods also worked with our second son, although he started out in his crib and was only in the family bed briefly during a move -- i.e., he was easier to handle.

There are also great sleep tips from Ms. West that will help your kids and you. All in all, an excellent buy.

HURAAAAAY Kim West!
My son Larkin soothed himself to sleep and slept through the night starting at ten weeks old. "A miracle!" my husband and I declared, and boasted ad nauseum. At four and a half months, we took him on a trip to England for the wedding of our dearest friends. He did remarkably well with the time change, and slept beautifully the first three nights we were there. The fifth night we had to drive a stick shift car on the left side of the road to get him to calm down, and we left him in his car seat in our little bed and breakfast so we could get a few hours ourselves before taking off for Heathrow. This was the last night he slept through the night until he was 11 months old! If only I had known....it began the night we returned - he awoke in the middle of the night; nursing was the ONLY solution. Gradually he woke up more and more each night; at its worst, he was up five times a night! I was exhausted. My friend was sleep training her daughter, who is six weeks older than Larkin, and had seen Kim West on the Today Show. She bought the book and recommended it highly to me. I borrowed her copy, but ended up buying my own. It's that good! Using her methods, I got Larkin to sleep through the night after only TWO nights of trying! He's three and a half now, and still a super sleeper. Her methods are gentle and require consistency, perseverance, and patience. There WILL be crying, and it's heartbreaking, but it WORKS, and you're there, comforting your baby or child, so you're not abandoning them and you don't feel awful. It's just the best. I had my daughter Marloe this past March, and I'm sleep training her from infancy. I just put her to bed with her eyes wide open a half an hour ago and haven't heard a peep out of her. Larkin's been in bed for an hour now.....my husband and I have free time and peace for a couple of hours before we go to bed! BUY THE BOOK!!! FOLLOW HER SUGGESTIONS!!!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!

Excellent sleep guide!

I was just coming on to check out prices on this book so I could buy a second copy of it (I loan mine out ALL the time and I really need more than one copy to loan to multiple friends!) so I thought I would write a review.

I think this book is excellent! I purchased it after the birth of my second son, who I got to sleep through the night at only 10.5 weeks! My 3rd son was sleeping through at 12 weeks, but what really makes this book so priceless is that it is a great all-around reference! It gives you guidelines and suggestions through the age of 5 and I find myself always going back to it when in doubt or in a rut. This book helps you to understand how much sleep your child needs and how to get him/her there. For me, it was a practical solution to shaping my child's sleep. It wasn't always easy, but the end result is happy, well-rested children and a happy, well-rested Mommy! I definitely recommend this book to everyone I know!

the only book that really helped!

Although I am a doctor, and I have read many books on sleeping, there was very little sleeping going on in my household. I cannot image letting my kids cry it out.
This book is a gentle, gradual and sensible way to get your children to fall asleep independently. My [...] goes to bed cheerfully, and as I leave, asks, "You'll be right here?" He knows that I have gradually weaned myself from a phyiscal presence, but is confident that I will always be there if he needs me. It has made all the difference, and I have a template to follow when there are changes in schedules, growing changes, etc.
I am purchasing 3 more today, to give to friends!
