Good guide

If you're going to buy a book to review for the exam, which you should, then this is a great guide. After reading and doing the included practice exam questions I was well prepared for the test. I would recommend writing code to test your grasp of the subjects which are new to you.

Master this Book

This is not where you begin learning Java 5.0 - you must come to this book very good with 5.0 Java - but this book must be mastered to pass the 5.0 Certification Exam.

Great Review of the basics

I wanted to brush up on my knowledge of Java, and found that this was an excellent way to do it. The book is very readable and gives a very good overview of the basics.

Perfect for Non-Beginners

I was seeking a book to prepare for the SCJP exam that wouldn't drag out the process by reviewing the fundamentals. While the book does cover some basic concepts, it does so in a complete and concise manner. I believe the book is preparing me well for the exam.

One of the major benefits is that each chapter is accompanied with practice questions at the end of the chapter. The only real disadvantage is that the ordering of chapters in the book--while not completely random--seems somewhat non-intuitive. To be honest, though, it'd be hard to find a good order to present such a wide spectrum of material.

Highly recommended for those with a basic working knowledge of Java! Others might need to seek a different book.

An old-time Java programmer

This book is for passing the SCJP exam only. It is very good for that purpose but not a very good book for learning how to be a good programmer. Even though there is a chapter for OOD but it is not a book to learn OOD either. But for the expressed purpose of this book by the authors, they did an excellent job.
