A Year's Romp Humorously Presented
Beth Lisick is a talented observational writer who works well with her medium using the
self

help
industry as a foil for her craft.
The idea of a new Self-Help program every month coupled with the observations of the presenters and conference participants, yielded several laughs for me as well as some wry smiles along the way.
While much of the material is humorous, there are some insights to be gained along the way and in the end she actually manages to draw it together to a conclusion that yields an opportunity for a little thought and introspection.
Be aware, there is a some rough language in the book. The lampooning of religious people may cause some a little dis
comfort
. For most however, taking the book in a light vein will yield an enjoyable read.

Funny, Dishy, and a Little Bit Sad

fees, and allow you a deliciously voyeuristic peek into the world of self-help
gurus
.
It's great fun to travel along with Ms. Lisick to self-help conferences, lis
ten
ing in to the latest gurus, and having a friend to dish with about the other attendees. The author tells her story well, and draws the reader in.
In the end, though, it's a bit sad, watching this woman - and those she observes - seek help in coping with daily life.
Beth's journey is hilarious!
When I saw that the author, Beth Lisick, would use a whole
year
to see what this so-called
self

help
world was all about, I was intrigued. My interest was further peaked because she would be engaged with some of my favorites; Steve Covey, Suze Orman, Stephen Covey and John Gray. (Sorry...can't add Richard Simmons to my list) Being that I, like Beth, am somewhat skeptical, I thought I'd get a first hand look into the seminars and places I always wished I could affort to at
ten
d.
What I got from the book was a first hand look at Beth. A witty and engaging writer. Sometimes I laughed out loud about the way she lived and just who she was as a person...so off the beaten path.
Well, I can't see
myself
taking Beth's experience in the self-help world too seriously...esp. since she didn't. But I must say, I have a new favorite author.
One
who writes with humor and wit. Pick it up, read it...you'll enjoy it!

A comical look at the "self-help" world.
Beth Lisick's "
Help
ing Me Help My
self
" was an enjoyable read.
I have no doubt she enjoyed her
year
of research, taking an Erma-Bombeck like trip through various self-help routes.
While remaining upbeat and humorous, she also takes a fair look at how helpful each
one
of the options was to her.
Which apparently was not very much. I enjoyed it, but there was no grand culmination of... anything. She had a year. They had a little money. She spent it. She didn't appear tremendously helped.
Seemingly many of the "self-help" options would have required more than a month to get your money's worth, and it also seemed that she didn't really HAVE any problems, which defeats the purpose.
That said, it was probably more fun than dressing up like a banana.
