Not as statisfying as I thought but still a great read.
It's a little hard to put a finger on my feelings on this book. In one way I loved it and in another I was disappointed. As proven true with Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn and other over hyped books, there's a kind of a let down even though the book is great and I think that's my problem with this one. If I had read it without all the hype from it becoming an Oprah Book Club selection I think I may have loved it more.
To me the greatest thing about the book is the character development.
Edgar
quickly becomes a cherished character so much so that I felt a strong maternal tug when he makes decisions that I didn't agree with. The dogs are written about in such a way you can picture them, with each of their unique traits, just as if they are sitting in front of you.
For the most part the
story
line is told incredibly well but in some areas the detail drags on way too long with no clear benefit to writing it that way. Without giving away any spoilers there were also a couple of points that never led anywhere when the anticipation is that it would be an integral part of the story. Furthermore, the ending just wasn't what I imagined and I was left greatly disappointed by it.
All that being said; I do still recommend this read. It's a huge book but overall worth the time to read.

A Mixed Bag of A Novel
Realize this review is not from one of your more seasoned
novel
readers. It is rare when I read one. Why read this one? Attracted by child who uses sign language plus dog training plus Bestseller caught my eye.
Enjoyed much of the author's prose and style, except that at places he goes into far too much detail for my taste, apparently to show the reader that he has done his research on the topic, e.g. as he admits in the end with his research on fires, etc. The prose on the romp after the Vet's death in the forest was a great read. It was shattered when he returns for the book's ending. The book could have easily been reduced by several hundred pages and had same effect.
Story
centers on two families whose involvement in the kennel eventually take their lives down crossed paths. As many others have pointed out, the finish left us disappointed. Further, too much spirituality of weird kind for this reviewer.

could have been one of the best ones!
wow! i thought i had found the best book about a boy and his dog. i did love this book. throughout the first 3/4 of it. i was reading as hard as i could, hungry for the triumphant ending i knew
edgar
would get. from the point almondine died ithings startes to fall apart. the ending was so upsetting b/c the author never gave us an understanding about so many things. i wanted so much more information on what happened to the dogs! was essay leading them to henrys? we will never know i guess. knowing all this i would still recommend the read. just be prepared to have to make up your own conclusions to so many unanwered questions you will most definately have.
