Real people.. in a funny and touching new way

I love this book. So many books these days border on glib and superficial, or heavy handed and pretentious, but Kilmer-Purcell strikes a perfect balance. He explores the dichotomy not just of the average drag queen, but the average person coming to terms with their issues and insecurities.

The characters are all so relatable, you can recognize the bravado covering the consuming insecurities, and it can remind you about that time you'd rather not talk about. The context and situations might be a little more exotic or extreme than the average person experiences, but the emotion, the embarrassment, the fear, and dread, the inexplicable joy, and the flood of relief are captured in a way I haven't read since certain classics written ages ago. Highly recommended! And looking forward to the next installment.

A Captivating Personal Story

It's a book that once you pick up, you don't want to put it down. Funny, sad, bittersweet, reminds me of Michael Cunningham and "A Home at the End of the World", not as smooth (could use some editing), but more personal.

At first, I was just interested in the unfamiliar world of male escort and drag queens. Then, through all the drugs, alcohol and prostitution, I saw 2 real people searching for that fleeting happiness. And I realized, as funny as it sounds, I started to care about the love between a crackhead hooker and an alcoholic drag queen.

All in all, a captivating personal journey and a wonderful read.

Don't let the 4 star rating fool you. I only give 5 star to books that I couldn't find any fault, and you can certainly find some areas for improvement in this book. But with me writing 3 to 4 reviews in a year, the mere fact that I am writing one showed how much I liked the book.

Funny, Harrowing, and Full of Heart

I just loved this book. By the time I got to page 19, I couldn't put it down, because that's the page where Josh, still drunk from the previous night, is frying an egg while talking on the phone with his mom. He's trying to explain to her how dressing in drag is different than being a cross-dresser or a transvestite, saying "I'm a celebrity trapped in a normal person's body."

The story is filled with excitement, affairs, fetishes and near-death experiences. But so much of the book is universal--someone trying to disappear into a persona that's more daring than he is, ...someone only telling half a story to his parents, ...someone trying to make a doomed love relationship work, ...someone attracted to the limelight but also craving the security of a simple and traditional life. It's a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it.

A witty and touching read

I recently heard Josh Kilmer-Purcell interviewed on a podcast and was intrigued by his description of his life and the memoir. I bought the book soon after, but had not read it until I had a flight from New York to Denver. I was not prepared for the book to be so good. I read it twice on the plane.

Kilmer-Purcell's writing is as engaging and entertaining as his alter-ego, Aqua. The unconventional love story is so amazingly beautiful and disturbing at the same time. I am very excited to see the movie adaptation of this. I hope it lives up to the book!
