Don miller doesn't "sell jesus"

I have grown up in a very catholic environment which usually does one of two things to teenage girls: turns them against catholicism, or gets them pregnant. I have gone through many phases in my spirituality and do not appreciate people "selling" me Christ. I get it! I dont need to be sold. Don Miller's attitude was one of exploration not preaching or sales. He did not plaster his doctoral mug on the front of the book promising the formula to save my soul. He spoke about his experiences and HIS MISTAKES and. . . that's it. But his language was moving and empowering and instead of making me feel like I needed to change who I am i realized I just need to be more of who I am to serve God. His approach is amazing and I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Exactly what I've been looking for

Miller put many of my thoughts and feelings into words. Like Miller, I was raised in fundamentalist Christian "religion" but spent much of my formative spiritual life frustrated by how much of Christian religion looks nothing like what the bible says. I was looking for Christian spirituality.

My husband and I have both read this book and have given it as gifts to several of our friends, some of whom are practicing Christians, not-practicing-so-much Christians, and non-Christians. I gave the book to an atheist friend who is searching for spirituality but has misconceptions about Christianity thanks to the type of staunch religion I grew up with and that gets portrayed in the media. She is precisely the type of person who will not come to Christianity by being beaten over the head with it, but only through genuine love and judgment-free compassion. I think and hope and pray that she will get a fresh perspective on Christianity from this book.

I note that one reviewer is tired of people pitting spirituality against religion, and for that reason apparently sees not much value to this book. If you are beyond that point in your spirituality, then this book may not have much to offer you. But there are still people out there who are recovering from "religious" upbringings who would benefit tremendously from this book.

As a right-wing conservative, I feel God would have me say that.....

I LOVE THIS BOOK AND I LOVE YOU DON!!!! This book was the start of my journey out of religion and into authentic Christianity. It takes the dread out of evangelism and makes befriending the secularist an adventure we've been missing all along. It also helped me understand how anyone can be a liberal democrat (hey--they want justice and peace, just like I do). This author is my new favorite!

Different lens on Christianity...

My brother is theologian, an avid reader and a missionary in a third world country. He recently told me I should read this book because it was the best book he had read in the last 5 years. I myself am a believer, but I sometimes have a hard time interpreting the bible and staying awake through sermons. This book, however, quickly grabbed my attention because it approaches Christianity in a nontraditional way. I found the author's interpretations and style of writing as thought provoking and refreshing.

I really enjoyed this book because it gave me a way to identify with Jesus and Christianity on the same level that my brother did. I think everyone should have a copy of this book.

Great Honest Book of a Christian in Growth

This book is nice because you see Don Miller's thoughts as he thinks them. It's written in a stream of conciousness point of view and this makes it so relatable for anyone presently growing in their christian walk, or just someone curious about how this happens.
