At last: Charts that make sense of it !

Finally, a text that explains the WHYs of it.

I lived with REAL Army Rangers in the 80's. They touted and followed the carbo-regimen. However, they were very aggressive in their daily exercise routines as well as in their normal activities. Me; sorry, but the owner of a computer business that exercised regularly, but SAT most of the other times.

I often wondered WHY I inherited this 'gut'. Well, now I know. Dr. Arnot may not have all the answers; but, he ceratinly has approached the matter in a no-nonsense way with "advice without the preaching". I have 30# to drop, and now see how. Oh yes: I have both the Airdyne & Treadmaster.

I have sent this book to others as gifts, and they too recognize it for its worth.

A Revolution in Nutrition

This book has changed my life - literally. I have been nutrition conscious for at least 10 years. I counted fat grams, ate less red meat, ate more pasta - and gained weight. I followed Dr.Ornish's plan and gained weight. I ate more fiber - and gained weight. I felt sluggish and had little energy. What could it be? I decided it was due to my 40-something metabolism and that I should get used to it - until I read Dr.Bob's book. I followed his advice on "feed-forward" eating and miraculously the weight started to come off. However, the real miracle was my increased energy level. I had so much energy that I HAD to exercise. I'm now more fit than I have ever been in my life. Thanks, Dr.Bob! Please write a cookbook!

Good advice for the highly motivated, not for couch potatoes

Dr. Arnot's advice has been very helpful to me because I have battled a weight problem for about 12 years. However, I am very educated about nutrition and know what works for me (I followed a macrobiotic diet some years ago with excellent results, and a lot of what Dr. Arnot suggests matches that kind of diet). I also have quite a few cook books that I have used which complement his hard-carbo, "peasant" diet approach. I think that for someone with little or no idea of how to eat even moderately healthily, this book would prove ultimately to be discouraging. I kept looking for a seven-day (or better yet, 30-day) menu plan with recipes; hopefully, Dr. Arnot will team up with someone wonderful like Martha Rose Shulman and write a "user's guide" that will lead the reader through the first 30 days without having to painfully figure out how to prepare and enjoy these kinds of foods.

Lose weight with good nutrition, not by dieting

In April, at my first physical in years, I weighed in at a shocking all-time high. Otherwise in good health, but with a history of diabetes in my family, my doctor said his No. 1 conern was my weight. "Don't diet," he said, "but you have to start making some changes that will be long-term solutions." I then (thankfully) saw Dr. Arnot's article in Men's Health magazine. It made sense. So I bought Dr. Arnot's book in, I think, late May; I've since lost 40 pounds, and feel extremely confident that I'll match another 40 by the end of the year. I have not been hungry once. Dr. Arnot's book explains the chemistry involved in our food decisions; armed (finally) with the knowledge of why and how we choose our foods, we can each make smart decisions about losing weight. His constant emphasis of the dangers of over-nutrition also helped me stay away from too many (and too large) meals. The best part of Dr. Arnot's nutrition guide, in my opinion, is the strategy he sets out for beating cravings to the punch -- how to eat now to avoid unhealthy cravings later. Well, it's worked for me, and I constantly refer to Dr. Arnot's book for advice and support. One comment to me by a co-worker: You are melting away. Not quite, but I'm now approaching my high-school weight, and feel confident that I'll be much lower by the end of the year. With Dr. Arnot's advice, it is simply not difficult. He quite simply changed my life, and I am now eagerly ordering his book RE Turn Back the Clock. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who is serious about losing weight and improving their health. -- Chris Lazzarino, Lawrence, KS, clazz@kuaa.wpo.ukans.ed

Good overview, straightforward, and up-to-date

I picked it up in a bookstore, started reading, and was surprised that my knowledge was so out of date. Like many in the 1980's, I bought into the "no fat, lots of carbos" school of nutrition. Turns out that solves one problem but creates another. I liked the way Arnot contrasts the "conventional wisdom" with the newer trends in nutrition and exercise. Granted, not all of his ideas are proven, nor do I agree with all of them, but he does present a relatively cohesive approach. By adopting just a few of his nutrition suggestions, I've found I've dropped some weight from the abdominal region, and my energy level is higher. I did feel he could have done a better job with exercise machines (at one point he says that stationary bikes are not effective, but he endorses biking outdoors as well as the "Spinning" stationary bikes, which are not that different from a regular one). But overall, he offers a very good program, reasonably balanced, and nothing too strange or potentially harmful to one's health
