the series is better

Here is the skinny. I bought the books and the 1st sesion dvd all at the same time. I watched the DVD's first. IT was AWESOME!! Clever and witty. Then I read the first book in the series. The Show was actually much better by far. I have yet to see the 2nd season, I am waiting for the dvd release. But I have moved on to the 2nd novel. It is a good read. Basically if you have to choose between the dvd or the book. Take the DVD the story line is much better and much more different from the book.

I was nervous that reading the books after seeing the first two seasons of Dexter would ruin the book for me. Not so. They are done differently enough such that I was surprised with the ending. The books take off on a very different direction.

I'm both a fan of the show and of these books. Very well written.

Of course, you may find yourself disturbed that you find a serial killer more delightful that many humans, but that's just the chance you'll have to take.

Enjoyable distraction.

Easy, enjoyable read. Serial killer story with a twist. Not always believable but that didn't detract from the enjoyment. Details of how the characters talk and think very similar to the TV show but some characters play different roles in the show. A good book to read between heavier reading.

The TV show is better

It is an entertaining book and a quick read.
Other than the main character, Dexter, the book is lack of development of other characters. It seems like Deborah, the sister of Dexter's vocabulary is extremely limited only to profanity, nor does she have the intelligence or abilities to solve any crimes by herself as a detective (and the whole Miami Police Department) without Dexter's "special hunches".
The TV show is so much better than the book on story and character development.
