Potentially life changing

It's a bit humiliating to come to a place where you need a self-help book. Still I got to the point where I would try anything. It wasn't what I expected- pages of common-sense advice and lives turned-around. There are some anecdotes but the instructions given are very concrete and surprising. Mainly, that we can change our thought patterns by writing them down and adjusting them.

Becoming Free!

This book was recommended by my therapist as something I could work on while out of the office, I bring the assignments from the book into to him and then we discuss the discoveries. There is a depression asessment chart in the book, when I started it a month ago I had a 39 which is moderate depression (39 out of a possible 100) and today when I took the test again I am down to an 11!! Many of my friends have been noticing that I am becoming free from this long term depression, and I am so thankful for Dr. Burns for putting this book together. Cognitive therapy is all about the truth, about discovering what is real and then remembering what is real when emotional outbreak would have otherwise conquered the moment. Now when I feel emotional, I think about the situation, identify the distortion and then confront it with the truth. It's AMAZING.

Also I highly recommend the section on perfectionism, it certaintly helps take off the chafing yoke of trying to do everything perfectly and accept yourself for who you are, a person, and usually a pretty incredible one at that.

Be done with self-help books forever

This is the book to end all self-help books. I was skeptical at first based on the title "Feeling Good", which sonds a little simplistic and pop-psychology esque, but the contents of the book are anything but, focusing on the established theories of cognitive therapy to change self-image, behavior, feelings of anxiety, and depressive moods. I was particularly impressed with Burns' resistance to labeling and to placing people in categories, which is probably a big part of why they act that way in the first place. If you think you are unique in the severity or permanence of your problems, if you feel that they can't be fixed, read this book with an open attitude and see what it does for you. Burns does a great job showing that you have the power to change things for yourself, whereas I think a lot of other psychology and self-help books make you feel like you have to fix yourself or examine root causes of why you are the way you are. I know I dont want to keep reading self-help books out of a sense that I need to fix things about myself or examine everything about certain behaviors - bypass this all with this book. Trust yourself to make the changes, don't give your moods power over you or expect any answer to come that you don't discover for yourself. Finally, when reading this book, I was struck by similarities between it and Maxwell Maltz' book Psycho-Cybernetics, which by now is outdated in some ways but is another atypical self-help book in that it contains real insight into living and overcoming obstacles. I would recommend both books - they both stand out for me among the amazing number of psychology books on the shelves today.

Great self help guide

This book was very helpful in identifying techniques that can help deal with anxiety and other conditions. It was very good.

Feeling Good - The new Mood Therapy

This is a self help book that teaches you to change the way you think. I am using the book in conjunction with actual therapy, in fact my therapist recommended it. I intend to read the book, and practice what it's teaching. Then follow up regularly. So far everything said in the book makes sense to me. I will have to get further along before I can say if it actually helps, but I believe that it will.
