The Kensington thingie rocks.

I bought this product because I was stopped by a cop (who warned me of dire consequences) once while I was wearing headphones in my car. I live in a suburb of Washington DC. A fair crowding of FM stations here. I was able to find an unused frequency despite this however ( 89.5 FM works for me). The transmission is pretty good and there is little static. The signal seems strong enough. Naturally its not quite as good as plugging in a pair of headphones but I can now get a whole lot more from my MP3 player. Money well spent.

Clearest FM Transmitter I've Tried

I've tried a lot of different car solutions for my iPods, both FM transmitters and cassette adapters. Thus far, the Kensington Universal FM Transmitter has been the best solution.

With respect to FM transmitters, unless you live in some Siberia where there are no radio stations, avoid the type of transmitter that only has a fixed number of preset stations at the top/bottom of the FM spectrum -- the two fixed-station transmitters I've tried were both very vulnerable to interference even from weak, adjacent stations. I was pretty happy with my Griffin iTrip that does allow any station to be selected, however, the Kensington seems to never experience the occasional, mild static that I would hear with the iTrip. The Kensington allows one to save three user-selectable stations, but its signal is so clean, I've never had to switch to a second station.

The only criticism I have of the Kensington is that I worry about its long-term reliability. The first unit I received was DOA, and had to be exchanged. The replacement unit seems to be fine, however, the display and buttons suggest pretty cheap construction, so I worry about longevity. Unless that happens, I highly recommend the Kensington, which can be found for under $20 if you shop around (I only paid $12.95).

Best out there

If you want to hear stellar quality coming from your mp3 player and hear it play on your car speakers, you aren't going to get it with an FM transmitter device. You need a more direct connection (in other words get a new stereo that has the appropriate inputs for your mp3 player).

That being said, this device is the best FM transmitter for MP3 Players out there. I've previously owned the iTrip and that was pretty good, but this Kensington product is even better. Find the right station to use (find one with the most static, this will produce the clearest sound), and crank the volume on your mp3 player to about 2/3. Kensington is more powerful than the other fm transmitters out there so you won't have to crank up your radio stereo much.

I haven't run into a problem with it shutting off in the middle of playing a song as others have reported, but I do tend to listen to loud energy music so that may be a factor. However, I did notice that it did not turn itself off when I turned my ignition off. That could just be with my car though because I have a car that keeps the headlights on for like 30 seconds after you turn off the ignition.

Its shape is not as big as the pictures make you think, but it does feel loose in my cigarette lighter (I think that's just my car though). I prefer this hardware design to the iTrip's because there is just the plug and a wire, as opposed to plug, wire, controller, wire.

If you just want mp3s on your current stereo NOW, and don't care about perfect quality, buy this brand. If quality is really important to you, find a direct connection.

good purchase for me

I am happy with this purchase. I live in a city of about 100,000 and it works fine for me. If it gets staticy I just find another channel. Good price for a good product.
