Horizontal scroll in XP _does_ work...

I won't give this product a 5, because it has a few design annoyances, but the mouse is exactly what I expeccted from a non-laser BT mouse.

I, too, was befuddled when I saw the L/R mechanical functionality, and saw reviews saying it doesn't work. Maybe on Mac? It did not work for me with no sw installed (which it should have, IMHO). I have used it for about a month, and I am still using the batteries it came with.

All of a sudden, after about 3 weeks or so, the horizontal scroll started working. I cannot explain it, but it does. I have changed nothing with the mouse at all. I am using a beefy Dell D820 dual core 2.33GHz with 4GB RAM, with WUXGA+ and all the bells and whistles.

So back to the 4? Well, I shop almost exclusively on Amazon, and value all of your opinions on purchased products very much. I always give back by sharing frank assessments and photos (where applicable). The design "flaws", if you can call them that, stem from 2 annoyances, in order of importance:

1. You have to manually tuen the mouse off, or it just sites there and eats power all night/day. I know it has to keep the connecction to the BT host, but you'd think in this day & age we'd have figured this out. We can put a man on the moon, but...
2. The "pads" on the bottom. How to explain this... There are 3 pads, or plastic extensions, that the mouse uses to put itself into contact with whatever your mouse is on, like a table or mousepad. The "front" has 2 small ones, which are great. The back, however, has a single, large one that takes up the entire width of the mouse (unnecessarily). So why complain? This makes the mouse unnecessarily hard to move on almost any surface, as it has all of this extra material creates excess friction.

These may seem silly to most of you, but they take away from an otherwise perfect mouse. WHat would really be perfect? A BT Laser mouse. I have searched for one, but none are good enough yet. I settled on this mouse instead, and at $50 you get what you pay for, but no more.

All in all, a good bargain at $50.

excellent

I don't really need a mouse that has as many buttons as fingers in one hand (Logitech please read this). The classic 3 buttons are more than enough, and as this little thing can also scroll horizontally it is just what I needed. Bluetooth made sense as I have a macbook, it works nicely, 'sleeps' when I'm not using it for some time (10-15 mins I think) and wakes just in a second when I shake it. Great!
As I added it to my bluetooth favorites I don't need to wait to start my login, it works just as soon as my mac is on. The package came with 2 AA batteries, so you can start using it at once, nice touch Kensington.

Kensington Bluetooth

I'm using this mouse on an iMac running OS 10.3. The mouse worked great right out of the box including the right mouse button and scroll wheel. It takes a little getting used to the mouse going to sleep after a short period of inactivity, but that does seem to improve the battery life significantly. The form factor is very comfortable both for me and my wife.

Kennsington Si670m better than the Targus AMB03US

I bought this mouse after my Targus Bluetooth AMB03US mouse stopped functioning. Just as well, because the Targus would loose the connection with my HP Pavillion laptop FREQUENTLY (hours), many times requiring me to reboot (when switching on and off, or re-discovering wouldn't work). The Kennsington has been MUCH better and only rarely (weekly) looses the connection (and I suspect the HP laptop may be the culprit as switching the Bluetooth button off and back on restored the connection - no sweat). I do miss the slightly better form factor of the Targus and the Targus did glide a bit smoother on my mouse pad - but on a hard surface there is no difference. I haven't really missed the rechargeable aspect of the Targus because the battery life of the Kennsington has been much better, now going on a month for the Kensington vs. a week for the Targus. The side click of the wheel for horizontal scrolling didn't initially work but I found an updated driver at MajorGeeks.com and click the Drivers link and scroll down to K72271 Si670 Bluetooth Wireless Notebook Mouse driver.

Great Overall, only a few flaws.

Positives: For a bluetooth mouse, this is a good one, backed by the nice price as well. It is one of the few bluetooth mouses at this price with a very functional 4 way scroll wheel. Its battery compartment is also very nicely designed (some mouses have horrible compartments where you have to pry them out). In this one, you squeeze the sides and the batteries can slide right out. You won't ever accidently squeeze the compartment open while using it (including during gaming), and you won't need to ever really open the compartment that often anyway. My standard AA batteries are still fine after about a month of daily use. The controls are easily adjustable as well. You have 4-direction scrolling, left and right click, a wheel click, and 2-direction wheel click scrolling (holding the wheel click, then scrolling up and down). The wheel click scrolling can be assigned to other functions, different from the standard up and down scroll. It's a lot smaller than my old mouse but I quickly adapted to it and now my old mouse feels large.

Negatives: It does have a few problems however. Every once in awhile, it will randomly lose connection with the computer. This might have to do with interference of other devices, though 90% of the time this is the only bluetooth peripheral in the area. It will reconnect within 10 seconds though, but it's still annoying. This is why I don't recommend this for fast paced gaming at all. I think the sharp, constant movements of the mouse often throw it for a loop because it disconnects the most during fast games like UT2004. With the Sims 2 however, I can usually play without a problem at all. Rarely, when I turn it on or when it has disconnected, it will have trouble connecting within 10 seconds. The indicator light usually turns green for a few seconds, blue for a few seconds, and then goes out, at which point it has reconnected. Rarely though, it won't turn blue and therefore won't reconnect. So I have to turn it off and on again, which is a slight nuisance.

It has never refused to connect to my computer. If it won't connect, turn the mouse off and on again and click a bit until the indicator light comes on. Overall it's reliable, easy to configure, and very portable. If you are curious I use it with my Macbook Pro running Tiger 10.4.10
