Amazing hardware package for the price....
I've been using an earlier model Toshiba Satellite for four years now. I've hauled it all over the U.S., and as it has gotten older, I've certainly stopped babying it. It has never missed a beat, which is why when *this* model became available at an even deeper discount in a brick and mortar store, I picked it up immediately. Although I've only had it a a week (and the true test comes over time), it works great. Had a small issue with the integrated wireless connecting to my WEP-protected network. I changed the encryption at the router to WPA-PSK, and it it's worked fine. Although the bundled software isn't terrific, it's adequate, and overall it's free of shovelware. Light, big screen, quiet and a
dual
-layer
DVD
writer. Gotta like that! For the price, I can't imagine doing better.

Memory issues
I picked up one of these guys in a brick-and-mortar store, but ended up returning it within a few hours. The problem: the laptop comes with 1GB memory (2GB max), and the 1GB consists of 2 512MB DIMM's. So if you want to max it out (and you do, if you want to run
Vista
), that means you'll need to buy two 1GB DIMMs and throw away the two 512MB DIMMs that came with the system. That's too lame for words, so back to the store it went.
well worth the money
For a $599 laptop, you can't go wrong. After reading all the complaints about
Vista
, I think it's pretty fast and easy to use (even with the 1GB
ram
). Laptop seems light for one with a 15.4 display (seems lighter than a hp and dell i have with the same display size). Builtin card reader is a very nice feature. Surprised to find a complete system restore cd included (desktop and laptop manuf's either don't normally include or want to charge you extra for it). Battery life seems to get knocked, but is comparable with other laptops in this price range. Would buy again.

Good specs, but fan is noisy
I bought this laptop a few weeks ago for [...],which was a good value. It works fine, but my two complaints are the fan noisy and the
ram
(2x512 sticks rather than 1GB stick, makes expansion wasteful/more costly). I'm not so concerned with the ram, since I don't require any high end processing, but with the fan, even though I use it mostly for browsing the web and watching videos online, the fan seems to turn on and off frequently (on 10-30 seconds, off for about a minute), after using it for a period of time (30 minutes to an hour). It's very noticeable and distracting. Is it supposed to be like that? Does anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions regarding making the fan quieter, or turn on and off less frequently would be appreciated, if you can leave a comment. Thanks!

Great
This laptop arrived at my door much sooner than expected and was in great shape. I've gotten used to the Windows
Vista
and found it to be very user-friendly. The laptop was easy to set up and has many new, fun features. I'm quite satisfied.
