The "Right Stuff"

Having often been told, it's not a question of IF, but WHEN the hard drive will fail, I've tried CD's, DVD's and flash drives, but was never really happy because of software shortfalls, or the need to manually remember to back up.

This unit is just what I've been wanting. Compact, affordable, and great software. It automatically backs up "My Documents" and a couple of other folders which contain most of my personal stuff daily. The initial backup took a bit of time, but subsequent daily backups occur in the background while I'm doing other stuff, and only take a minute or so. It came in handy yesterday, I deleted a file by mistake, but was able to restore it by copying and pasting from the Maxtor, even gave me a choice of which day's version to back up. Neat...

Copying the whole hard drive was really easy, click on a couple of settings, then hit go. It was surprisingly fast, 14GB in about 40 minutes. Hopefully, restoring the drive will be as smooth, should it become necessary.

The one limitation, as others have pointed out in reviews elsewhere, is that it only allows automatic backup of what the manufacturers deemed to be the most needed folders, and not all. Any other folder/files need to be manually backed up (copy/paste, or whatever). One possible work around might be to include these in one of the automatically backed up folders.

There are limitations as to some features based on operating platforms, but works perfectly for my Windows XP.

Please note that the "Safety Drill" back-up feature allows for a backup of the entire hard drive, including the Operating System and programs.

A Must Have

the Maxtor Mini is a great drive for work or travel dosnt get to hot
I cant say anything bad about it and for $100.00 it is well worth it.
