Make All Your Friends Jealous

I've had my Asus eeePC, lovingly named Eeep, for about 5 weeks. I love it, as it does all that I need quickly, easily, and with style.

I videoed my excited opening of the box with my Flip Camera while on speakerphone with my friend. I would have posted that as part of my review, but all I did was squeal, which turns out to be irriating to watch.

STRAIGHT out of the box, literally, this little booger started working (insert squeal). I pulled out the laptop, the battery and the power cord, plugged it in, waited approximately 15 seconds and DING! there was the setup wizard. I ran around the house frantically looking for my atomic clock so I could be sure to set the time right (only to realize days later that it works on 24 hour time - be aware of that when you set up), clicked a few buttons and voila! I'm on. And I'm even on my house wireless! NO WAY! It took nothing to set this up.

Eeep runs Linux which, if you want to delve deep into it, has a steep learning curve. On the other hand, if you want to accept the little tabbed setup that it already has, Linux is childs' play. And it really could be. This is the most solid laptop I've ever seen. If you search youtube you'll find a French video of a guy dropping it all over the place, leaving it in freezing weather outside for hours and setting it on a home radiator - it never flinches.

Here's the coolest part. The eeePCs are preloaded with Skype, among other things, so I bought a cheap webcam for my home PC, downloaded Skype on the home PC, and played around between the two. Then, since Eeep is small enough to fit in my little backpack purse, I took it on my husband's and my weeklong trip to London & Greece. I left instructions for my mother & mother in law who were watching our kids, and we called them from overseas using the eeePC and Skype. FREE! AND WITH VIDEO! We walked out on our hotel room balcony and used the webcam to show them the Acropolis in the distance. Does it get cooler than that? OK, well it wasn't totally free, because apparently they don't like free wifi in Europe and I had to purchase 90 minute cards for 5 euros, but it was close! Another note about Europe - I took a converter for the funny plugs, but all the hotels we stayed in had one outlet that was meant for "shavers only," but it was the right voltage for the eeePC and we didn't have any trouble keeping it charged.

The Open Office software that comes preloaded on eeePCs is really pretty cool, and totally compatible with MS Office. All I had to do was save my document in the available MS Word format and no problemo, I could open it at work and home. There are 3 USB ports that have instantaneous connections so if I plug in a minimouse I don't have to wait for the computer to find it, it will just work. And flash drives? Piece of cake. I also bought an 8GB SD card to save my 593 pictures of Greece on so I can use the picture viewer to show my buddies.

As for the appearance, I bought the white eeePC, which has a somewhat shiny exterior. My friend bought the black one and it has more of a flat matte which seems to repel scratches a little better - that's just an FYI. The envelope like bag it comes with is really fine to protect it. I might purchase a leather padfolio looking kind of case for it someday, but for now the bag will do.

So, to wrap up since I could go on forever, the eeePC is SO worth the money. If you just need to be able to surf the Internet, check email, instant message, Skype, type up documents, create spreadsheets, play games, create and watch slideshows or organize your life the eeePC is for you. My friend and I couldn't think of any good reason to spend the extra money for the larger drives, and I haven't regretted that decision. We did pop for the eeePC with the webcam, and clearly that was a good choice for my family.

I'm trying to think of any downfalls with it, and the only thing I can come up with is that sometimes I have to re-enter my wireless key. Oh my. Isn't that awful? NOT. I saved my key in the Notes section of PIM and I have it there whenever and wherever I need it.

So, so far, so awesome. Eeep and I go everywhere together, and I have to admit, I feel like I'm pretty darn cool.

I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE this tough little computer. It handles everything that the larger computers can handle. Although my computer contains 4GB (some have 2GB and 8GM), I have my 8 GB or 16GB digital card available to insert, if necessary. I can also move information to a jump drive by utilizing one of the three ports built in, and then save my 8GB or 16GB digital SD cards for larger volumes. The Eee PC 4GB can also handle "portable ports," allowing access to 4-6 additional ports! The Eee PC also has access to virus protection. Another great feature of the Eee PC computer is that it displays a full screen with readable Micrsoft Works font. Still, another wonderful feature of this computer is that it is compatible with the two other computers and the printers in my house, and I can access and send emails and attachments from "my documents." The Eee PC is easy to use when taking notes at meetings, fitting on one's lap without overheating. The great battery life (2-3 hours) allows plenty of time for fun in the sun, serious writing, or just relaxing on the patio. Weighing practically nothing, the Eee PC 4GB has become my constant companion. It fits perfectly into my padded DVD case, or I can slip my Eee PC into my pocketbook or purse. Although the Eee PC series is fun, fun, fun, DO NOT MISTAKE THIS TOUGH LITTLE COMPUTER FOR A TOY! IT CERTAINLY IS NOT!

Incredible Laptop

I bought my Asus Eee with the 4GB memory and webcam, because I was concerned about the 2GB models because their memory can't be upgraded. Well using this model for a week now I can tell you if you are going to use this for web surfing and intend to keep the existing Linux software, get the 2gb model and save yourself a $100 bucks. The built in FireFox browser works on every website, the pages load fast, and I set it to automatically connect to my wireless network when I turn on the laptop. As for me, I love this machine and the existing Linux software works ok, but I will be loading XP on it. I miss my Windows!! Asus gives exact directions in their manual to do this and the XP drivers are on the Asus Eee website. Some interesting points:

1.Pressing F9 when starting the machine will set the machine to factory default. Comes in handy if you use a password and lose it!

2. SM Player works ok but jitters slightly when playing AVI files. You may not notice this, but I do and it bugs me. You can install VLC player to replace it.

3. Built in wireless adapter works mint! You can set it to automatically connect to your network when the machine is turned on. I like the little blue light that tells you if a wireless network is in range.

4. Screen is very nice, I have no complaints. Whats wrong with 800x480?

5. Laptop has the ability to add more memory through the USB or the SD Card slot. (this is why the 2gb model would be fine) I ordered a 8gb SD Card.

6. The USB ports accept everything. I haven't yet found a device that the Asus Eee would not accept!

7. The webcam works nice and you can click on settings and click add/remove programs to upgrade to the latest software.

8.I was surprised that I could type with two hands on the keyboard, especially after reading all the negative reviews. This review was typed on my Asus Eee!

9. I have a HP printer hooked to a desktop and I found it very easy to set the Asus to print through the wireless network to the desktop printer.

10. Battery has lasted longer than 3 hrs when not on the web or running the wireless. Even while surfing the web, the battery lasted approx. 2.5 hrs..

11.I have seen people adding a mouse, for me the existing mouse pad works mint! I set it to low sensitivity.

In conclusion, the Asus Eee is a fantastic little machine!

Love this little PC!

This computer really meets my needs! I needed something that was easy to travel with, that I could take notes on, and have a place to dump my audio and picture files. It doesn't do everything, but it does a lot! Because this little PC fit inside my pocketbook, that's all I had to take on the plane (instead of taking a carry-on bag with CDs and other entertainment). All my music easily fit on the computer with plenty of room to spare. It was so nice to be able to just whip out the computer from my bag and check email at the airport while waiting. It's really cute too and makes a great conversation piece. It made my day when geeks gathered round ooo'ing and ah'ing over my new gadget!

On the downside, the keyboard needs to be addressed. It's not so much the size of the keys, but the touch. I'm a decent typist and I found it hard to build up to a rhythm because of the keys. The touch isn't sensitive enough.

The Eee PC does load up SD cards (though not all, I had to bring along my card reader for my camera, but no biggie). It will load flash drives but not without some prepatory work. The forums on the Asus website were very helpful in that regard and I ironed out most of my problems. The one thing I am still unable to do (which is one of the reasons why I bought this computer) is load up my digital voice recorder. It recognizes that the DVR is connected, but it doesn't recognize the file structure. The forums tried to help but couldn't. Guess I'll have to find a Linux geek to help me out (p.s. you need to remind people on the forums that you're a newbie to Linux because otherwise you'll never understand what they're talking about!).

The sound is poor on this computer - it sounds like a transistor radio. That needs to be improved. I connect it to better speakers and that works just fine.

Finally, the webcam is great, so easy to use, but the format that it's saved in (OGG) is hard to work with. I had a hard time finding a conversion program for it. Again, the forums were very helpful in this regard.

That all said though, I haven't been as much in love with a gadget as I have been with this one! I love its size, how easy it is to connect to the web, how well the office products work (totally compatible with MS Office, even saves the files in MS), and the webcam. For $399, this thing does just about everything the iPhone does and more (you can make phone calls using Skype) and it's almost just as portable. It seems like a 'chick' PC to me - I was surprised how many guys were interested in it.
