Washington Corruption in Politics

Vince Flynn's political thriller, Term Limits, has tapped into a large vein of American thinking.
In one night the political fat cats of Washington DC got a shot across their bow. Three of the top corrupt politicians were executed with the precision of smart bombs - leaving not a trace of forensic evidence that could lead the FBI in any direction.
The following morning the assassins deliver an ultimatum to the government. In their text they quote from Thomas Jefferson's words, `that when any form of government becomes destructive... it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government.'
We are invoking this right to rise up and alter the course of our government. You have had your chance to correct America's course and you have failed.
A joint task force was formed including FBI, CIA and Military Intelligence to meet at the White House and develop a plan to cope with the grave situation. The first meeting had little success and ended in squabbles and finger pointing, done mainly by the president's chief of staff in order to deflect blame from the White House.
A young congressman and former Marine, Michael O'Rourke is the first to put some of the pieces together and he leads the reader from hypothetical questions to undisputable evidence.
Flynn has shined the light on the muck and mire of Washington's Foggy Bottom and gives us a glimpse of our present political class.
When you get to the end of this fast paced story about corruption you want to stand up and cheer for the good guys.

SIMILAR TO 24

I finished this on 12142007. A good book but not up to Tom Clancy's early novels. I found the plot to be similar to the television program 24 which does not mean it is a rip-off of the program. The book was published in 1997 so a case could be made that the writers/producers of 24 were influenced by this book. I liked the book and wanted to start with this one since this is Vince Flynn's first published novel. I plan on reading all of his stuff.

For those reviewers who gave Mr. Flynn a thumbs down due to no minority - read black - characters or too many killings of prominent politicians and/or the lack of sympathy for their deaths; well - people need to remember this is a novel and it is the authors choice on where he wants to take the story. I recommend this book to those who like thrillers and who are sick and tired of PC.

A Great Start

This is the first novel that Vince Flynn wrote and I have to say it was a great start. I've read all of Flynn's books and can't decide which one of them I like the best. Mitch Rapp, who doesn't appear in this story, is the protagonist of all the other Flynn books. I look at Term Limits as a good starting place for people who have had the Mitch Rapp series recommended to them. This book is action packed and the main characters (Navy Seal dudes) appear in most of the Rapp books. Give this one a try.

OK, but I hope his future books are stronger

I heard some strong comments regarding Vince Flynn's books. So, as a lover of politics, I thought I might have found a great new series of books for some pleasurable bedtime reading. Having read the first book by Flynn, I'm not convinced I found what I was looking for. One of the major story lines of this book revolves around a few special forces dudes who decide to kill some nasty politicians. Why you ask? Well, among other reasons, because those horrible politicians did not pass balanced budgets. It's a sure sign of how good the 90s were when the worst thing to write about is budget deficits. More amazingly, the US budget WAS balanced then. To me, that's not a compelling storyline. (In fairness, one of the politicians released info that lead to the deaths of some Navy SEALS.) Unbalanced budgets are indeed a serious problem, regardless of whatever lessons VP Cheney took from the Reagan years, and we're adding to our childrens' difficulties by continuing to hand them the responsibility of fixing our bad budgets in the 2000s. But still, that's not just the fault of politicians. The American people want big government and big tax cuts, and keep sending back to Congress and the White House people who have no intention of balancing the budget. Flynn's beef is not really with Congress, it's with the American people.
Still, beyond the ridiculousness of that, the second half of the book becomes far more exciting and some of the characters are worth following in future books. Perhaps next summer I'll give Flynn another shot.
