THE FINE PRINT
i am using
commit
(4 mg cherry) and so far so good. smoked since a teenager and am 45, so this is NOT easy. honestly tho, these
lozenges
take care of the physical stuff and i can handle the mental aspects.
as a smoker who truly enjoyed the oral stimulation part of smoking, i liked the idea of a lozenge, but was skeptical about the actual use directions. i have a bunch of old gum laying around that i could not use... 'chew five chews, then take out and put it somewhere for a while and chew it again five times'...what? too complicated and not really gum as i see it. so i bought the lozenges. i wanted to post what the package directions say, the problems they posed for me at first, and how i have modified/ignored them.
'...place one in your mouth and allow to dissolve slowly... dissolves in about 20-30 minutes... move from side to side occassionally... minimize swallowing... do not chew... do not eat or drink 15 minutes before using...'
so you can't SUCK on these any more than you can CHEW the gum. works out tho.
i have taken to breaking them in half because they last FOREVER! i had a whole one in my mouth, moving it occasionally, for 2 hours. halves fit better between the cheek and gum, and the whole pack will last twice as long.
as far as no eating or drinking for 15 minutes before use... i wish they would tell you WHY NOT. every smoker needs a cig after a good meal and with coffee in the morning, and i sit here this morning drinking my coffee with a lozenge in my cheek.
what's really good is that you can use up to 20 lozenges a day, so you can reach for them like you would a cig. great when the actual product USAGE, in addition to its ingredients, helps the process along.
i say go for it with this product. sorry for my poor composition here... this third day i am a bit addle-minded.

Finally quit smoking
I have been a smoker for 30+ years about 1.5 packs a day and quit over 15 months ago. I used the
Commit
lozenges
and they work really well - did not have too many bad spots - however - I still use the lozenges - about 6 or so a day of the 2 mg and am now going to have to think about weaning myself from those. I had asthma from the smoking and I don't have that problem anymore. I would recommend this product.
Works better than all other NRTs
Like DougNJ I was a long term smoker - but smoking mini cigars, so you can imagine what my nicotine addiction was like - nothing like a cigar when you wake up. I tried the patches (too much or too little buzz, and that patch burn!) and then several times around with the gum (your jaw gets awful tired after a few days ). While those products work for some smokers, they just didn't help me in those clutch situations like a few drinks in a bar or morning coffee.
But these babys work in all weather. The good thing about the
lozenges
is that they deliver an easily controlled dose over the 20-30mins and have a nice tingle, which you really had to work at with the gum. Unlike some I didn't get any heartburn even when I chewed the last fragment of the tablet. Not that I'd recommend that for that last jolt. Didnt find any problems with having one after a meal also but perhaps lesser addicts might want to follow the instructions.
If you are really determined to quit but have a strong compulsion to smoke going, give these lozenges a try rather than the alternatives. 12 weeks and counting now..

EZ quit
I was a light smoker (5-6 cigarettes a day), but decided to go ahead and quit altogether in order to qualify for some better (less pricey) life insurance. Went with the 2 mg when a co-worker told me how the 4 mg
lozenges
did such a great job for him. He was a 2 pack a day smoker and was able to quit smoking and is doing well so far.
I have used them off and on for the past 3 weeks and they are helpful. I would caution others however that the first couple of days of use will leave the inside of your mouth feeling a little sensitive, but it does pass.
