SB-600 used as remote flash
Very happy w/this
flash
. I use to supplement my sB-800 as a remote flash. It set up w/out a hitch and works as described. I have not used it as my main flash and do not intend to, so I will not comment on that.
One of the best accessories for your Nikon dSLR!
Bought to go with my
Nikon
D60.
Although this
flash
seems spendy, once you have it you won't regret spending the coin! I went back and forth on whether to buy this at all and then back and forth on whether to cough up even more for the SB-800. As you will see, there are many reviews explaining the differences and the justifications one way or another.
I'm glad I went with the 600. I have found it to have plenty of power and range. The features on it are more than what most need and I, personally, don't need the remote slave feature of the 800. The auto mode works very well and I rarely use any other mode but when I have I have been very pleased with the outcome.
If money is no object then buy the SB-800 for the extra range but otherwise this is the flash to buy.

SB600, an enlightening source of light in my life
The SB600 is almost for everybody. Just reading tonight that
Nikon
introduced on July 1 its new flagship speed light, the SB900
flash
. Unless you really need the power as a pro, save some $340.00 and buy SB600. I have been using the SB600 for two years, first with Nikon D70, and now with my bellowed D200. SB600 is probably the best and wisest choice for 90-95% of us, enthusiasts or even retired semi-professionals who used to write (and take their own pictures) while employed by decent print media (like me, in Central Europe.) I have used the SB600 many times, also as a remotely controlled flash. It never disappointed me. In maybe 1-2% situations, any minor range deficiency in lighting of SB600 can easily be adjusted / corrected in Photoshop. If money is absolutely no object or any new hi-tech gadget makes you happy or you know exactly what you are doing and why, then buy SB800 or perhaps it's brand new upgrade, the SB900. Otherwise, the SB600 is powerful, relatively very small and very light to carry in your pocket, if necessary, so go for it.

Super nice addition
I really hate my built in
flash
on the D40. I have a lens cap on my 18-55mm lens, which when zoomed out blocks the flash for that part of the picture. I wanted a external flash anyways and didnt feel like spending the 300 for the SB-800 or the 50 for the cheap flash that just places the flash higher on the camera.
I reviewed the 400, 600, and 800 and found the 600 to suit my needs best. Im on somewhat of a budget so its price is fine for me and also it has most of the features the 800 does, just not quite as much control/power.
The bounce this one can do is really amazing to watch. I was messing around with the angles and had my brother stand somewhere while i fired some shots. With each angle i moved up there was less and less of the shadow of him in the picture.
Im really glad i picked this one up, and if you are on a budget and need a flash, the 600 will suit your needs. If you have the cash get the 800 of course, but there is nothing wrong with the 600 for more "beginner" photographers.
