Palm TX as replacement for old Handspring Visor
Purchased this for my wife, as a replacement for an old Handspring Visor, after reading both positive and negative reviews here and with the realization that
Palm
may not be around much longer. Have thought about the Treo before but decided against it for various reasons. Too bad Palm isn't doing so well with their smart-phone sales and it is a pity they seem to have largely abandoned development of their organizers. It's somewhat understandable, though, in light of digital device convergence.
She now much prefers the bright color screen over the old unlit, black and white LCD of the Visor. We set it up for 802.11 wireless in our home network but doubt that will get much use due to the limited browsing capabilities. It has more applications that she will probably care to learn.
After the initial syncing with her work desktop, the TX failed to sync again due to the (third party?) Documents-to-Go conduit (or application) hanging, apparently in an infinite loop. Canceling the sync didn't work requiring us to terminate the application under Windows. After trying a couple of different things, and searching on Google, we were finally able to make synchronization work by disabling Documents-to-Go. This seems like a known problem and is ashame for out-of-the-box behavior. We were also dismayed with the USB cable as the portion which fits into the TX does not have any release buttons and must, apparently, be removed with enough force and in such a way as to cause concern and fear of bent pins. So far, though, the USB cable and pins have survived so maybe the concern is for naught. Still, release buttons would have been nice. Finally, the
case
that comes in this package seems poorly engineered - with a closing clasp/method that looks prone to being difficult to work and wearing out.
Here's the breakdown:
Pro:
- Bright, colorful screen
- Easy to use Palm OS and applications
- Many applications
- (Relatively) new technology and
hard
ware
- Rechargeable battery
- 802.11
Con:
- Battery is not user replaceable
- Case clasp is difficult to work and will likely to wear out quickly
- USB cable has no release buttons making removal difficult
- Software (specifically, Documents-to-Go) is buggy out of the box, causing hang
- 802.11b instead of 802.11g
- Limited browser and screen dimensions for browsing
- Most unfortunately, I fear Palm probably won't be around much longer

Great Value
Great Product. I am a fan of
Palm
- have been for a long time. The
hard
case
is a must, the case will allow the device to live through falling on concrete. Minor gripes - you cannot plug in ear buds with the hard case closed, surfing the web isn't as easy on the palm as it is on the I-phone (but it does work well considering the screen size), I had some minor problems getting the bluetooth to work with my cell phone. If you like the Palm platform you will be pleased with this device.
Inconsistent
I decided it was time for an upgrade from my Z22 to a
palm
pilot with more features. First I bought a Tungsten E2 at an on-line store and it turned out to be defective. I returned it and got my money back and went to a local Best Buy and bought another one. It too turned out to be defective. Both of them had the same problem. They would not respond to the stylus when I'd 'click' on an icon. Sometimes I'd click on one area and another program would open.
After talking it over with a friend who says the Palm is a great product that he has used for years and thinking I'd just been unlucky, I decided to give it one more chance and bought the more expensive Palm TX.
The TX has the same problem. But sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. Every time I turn it on I'm not sure whether or not it will work. And it seems to not work more often that it does work.
The bottom line is that I like all of the features the TX offers but I can't recommend the product based on my experience.

Palm T|X met expectations
After using WindowsPC
handheld
s for years I thought I would try
Palm
to see how it compared. I wanted bluetooth capability so it gave me an excuse. It's a little more basic and feels more solid than my HP IPAQ but handled all of the tasks equally well.
I miss the explorer and stylus press-and-hold edit of the MS system but can learn to live with those differences
El Gordo's Palm TX Review
Palm
TX
Handheld
with
Hard
Case
I have used Palm products for some years. Until the Tungsten T with flash memory, I had nothing but problems. My Tungsten T has perform extremely well over the last several years, but started to had problems. I decided to get the Palm TX, but I was having a lot of apprehensioms about it. So I purchased the Palm TX from Amazon which included a hard care. The price was lower than Palm's. So far it has performed extremely well. I am still working with some of the features my Tungsten T did not have. I believe this is going to be the best Palm PDA I have owned.
