Not for complete idiots, but strictly for beginners

As a fan of the "Complete Idiot" series, and having some interest in writing a novel someday, I purchased this book. At first, it seemed like it would turn out to be a fine read, but alas, it wasn't. Tom Monteleone's ego really affected my enjoyment of the book. Granted, everyone's gotta show a little ego, but Monteleone shows too much too often.

Also, I learned almost nothing from the book. The one section where I did learn something dealt with formatting and submissions of novels. I'm 15 years old, and I learned nothing from this. Although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised - it IS called "The COMPLETE IDIOT's Guide to Writing a Novel".

This book isn't for complete idiots, but it's definitely for beginners only. If you want to learn the basics of writing a novel, this is a good place to start; otherwise, steer clear.

Complete Idiot? More like Complete Novelist

I bought this book out of the Christmas money that I recieved last year, hoping it'd help me write out my novel.

And it has, ladies and gentlemen.

Tom showed me all sorts of genres, "The List", and helpful tips and even some plots throughout. The book itself was a good buy, some might not agree with me, but I needed this book very badly. I suggest this to anyone how aspires to be a writer.

Ignore the semi-illiterate critics here

This book is a good, comprehensive useful resource for novelists. I find it amazing that the bottom two reviewers here for this book were discouraged by it in terms of producing their own work. If you are discouraged by a book that took a tremendous amount of research and effort to produce, that is there at a small price for you, to help you write your own novel, then you are not fit to be a novelist or to call yourself a writer.

I have a number of excellent books on writing novels, but alone they won't get the job done. You still have to write your book yourself, and Tom Monteleone is another of a good selection of writers such as Lawrence Block, Albert Zuckerman, Donald Maass etc. that have excellent books on the market to help you live your dream of becoming a novelist.

There's also absolutely nothing wrong with writing for money or in a genre field. If you don't intend to write for money as a novelist while living in our expensive modern world, frankly, you're just an idiot.

I trully enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.

It's well worth the $12. Is everything in it something you absolutely must follow? Of course not. If you believe that then you should be a computer programmer or an accountant who must always "follow the rules". Writers make their own way in the world/create their own rules, and Tom Monteleone is an excellent guide for you to get started finding that way and helping you to define it for yourself. That's all he intends to do and all he can do.

People who waste time writing bad reviews of books on Amazon are to be pitied. Go back to watching television and let the real writers get back to work.

You need a fun and positive attitude to face the challenges of becoming a successful novelist and people who can't even tolerate guidance from someone who's been there (Tom Monteleone) with gratitude and energy to use what they've learned, should, as I said, go back to watching television and let the rest of us do the writing for them.
