Lest We Forget
In a sense this is
America
's Holocaust Museum. Though I'm an American only by immigration, I'm old enough to remember apartheid/segregation as a child in Tennessee and Florida. Then I moved to rural northern California for high school in the 1950s, and I remember the smirking racism that was as hurtful as segregation and that could easily turn bloody. Now I have a son in a high-performing academic high school in a city that prides itself on liberalism, and yet I see that even now a touch of smug political incorrectness in the form of racial stereotyping is never far from the surface. Yes, of course, things are an order of magnitude better than 50 years ago, but I bought this book to ensure that I and my son and my grandson-to-be will never make the mistake of forgiving ourselves and our country for unforgiveable crimes.

Terrorism in the United States
Not taught in the schools and not publicized internationally, the reality of citizenship or living in the United States of
America
has been full time terrorism if you are one of the victims or intended to be victims portrayed in this book
Powerful
A must for every African
America
n. We must never forget what we as a people went through, even after slavery. The pictures are powerful and grim reminder of how low human beings can go in the treatment of each others because of their differences.

A commemoration of ignorance, fear and truth
Even in a time of high technology horror movie imaging, that has most viewers numb to blood and gore and man's brutality and disrespect to fellow man, the images from this exhibition will shake you as hard as you have ever been shaken. Few people will have the "guts" to stomach more than a few images at a time. All persons, of all colours, from every nation should contemplate the emotion of ignorance, that causes the predujice and the horrendous consequences of hate, that produced the culture of
lynching
.
Perhaps, it is true that to begin to forgive is to begin to love. For that reason alone, the exhibition, and this book that results are an extremely important documentation of an era that one would never expect to be recorded in such vivid
photography
, and described with such intimate detail.

Upsetting But Essential
"
Without
Sanctuary
" is an amazing, but very upsetting, collection of
lynching
photographs and some of the stories that go with them. Although the images of the beaten, burned, mutilated, and hung victims are horrible enough on their own, the thing that truly disturbs me about these photographs are the spectators - men, women, and children - smiling, goofing off, and proudly posing in front of the corpses, just as if they were at a Fourth of July picnic or something. It's really frightening to think how cruel and vicious "good god-fearing citizens" behaved not so very long ago (the majority of the pictures date from the 1890's-1930's, though the most recent comes from 1960). I think this book is performing a great service by refusing to allow this country to forget its own barbarities of the not-so-distant past.
