Rated R for language and strong bloody violence.

"Scream" was a wittily postmodern recasting of slasher films of the early 1980's like "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" and their endless horde of imitators. On one level, "Scream" was filled with all the shocks and thrills expected of it, yet there was another whole level to it which at the same time was consciously crafting a film that was slyly mocking and parodying its own genre and cliches. Characters stopped in the middle of the flight from the slasher to hold discussions about what characters in slasher films did in the situation and which type of character was supposed to survive according to the slasher movie formula. And following "Scream"'s success, what more natural to follow it up with than a "Scream 2", which gleefully launches into satirizing the pandemic of sequels that followed most slasher films in the mid-1980's. The plot follows on from the first; Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and fellow survivor Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy once again as the hilarious film geek) are attending a film and theatre school, while Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) is releasing a film based on the events of the first film (which hilariously parodies the first films opening) called "Stab". Unfortunately, at "Stab"'s opening, two people are found dead after being killed by a man in a mask. The paranoid Sydney tries to tell herself that it is just a coincidence, but she knows the truth of the matter all too well.

The film has a fabulous opening that perfectly encapsulates the joyful sense of meta-fictional play that screenwriter Kevin Williamson delights in, while watching a film based on the events of the first film (wherein the opening of the first film is replayed but amusingly satirized; one scene rather funnily digs at directors that like to pay homage to the "Psycho" shower sequence) a copycat killing takes place in the theatre where the victim's death throes are just taken to be part of the promotional gimmick for the film. Here the constant blurring of the lines between what is happening and `the artificial' is dazzling. Unfortunately for "Scream 2" the film that ends up on screen sadly fails to meet the criteria it itself establishes for worthwhile sequels. Williamson's script is far too burdened down and overweighed by the necessity of trying to turn the survivors from the first film and most of the cast members into potential suspects and as a result the jokey genre interplay that essentially made the first film gets lost. Wes Craven, director of the first film, once again shines with his celebrated use of the camera, piecing together an exciting, dramatic thriller that will keep you guessing until the final reel. Indeed, the film contains genuine tension; the vague reconstruction of Casey Becker's (Drew Barrymore from the initial scene in "Scream") demise is very scary, and a scene where Sidney and her friend are trapped in a police car with an unconscious killer is exceptional; however, "Scream 2" tries too hard to be clever and witty, instead of just getting on with it.

It's Time To Scream Again...

After becoming a phenomenal hit with young, and even some older, movie audiences with "Scream", Wes Craven was beginning to come under immense pressure to top himself with a much anticipated sequel. Dimension films being smart enough to know that this is one horror franchise that if handled correctly could prove to be very profitable and entertaining, lobbied hard to get both director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson back for the sequel. Upon accomplishing this task, and also the task of bringing back the acting talents for the surviving characters from the first film, the production crews for "Scream 2" were up and running at full speed.

"Scream 2" finds young Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) going to college, and trying to put her horrific past behind her. Try as she may, with the release of a movie based on the events that engulfed Sidney's life in Woodsboro, Sidney once again is forced to face her tragic life. Just when the movie madness is dying down, murders begin to occur on Sidney's college campus, and it appears that someone is setting out to make a real-life sequel to the events in Woodsboro. With history repeating itself, news reporter Gail Weathers (Courney Cox), Woodsboro's own deputy Dewey (David Arquette), and a couple of other survivors from the original film, are back to try to save themselves and prove their innocence.

Any complaints or worries anyone had about a sequel to "Scream" have but to watch "Scream 2" and realize that they had nothing to worry about. Everything that was great about the original movie has been maintained and improved upon for the sequel. Director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson have once again crafted a very clever web of suspicion and murder, that will entangle you and never let go until the credits roll. All of the complaints I had about the first film being to gory and a little too immature in places have been corrected. The gore factor appears to be lowered, as Wes Craven seems to be restraining himself to some extent with the murder sequences, and all of the dialogue is handled with maturity and care. All of the actors are terrific, the plot twists are once again very unique, and will catch you completely off guard. The characters are all thoroughly engaging, but sadly not all of your favorite characters will survive to the end.

Overall, "Scream 2" is yet another thrill a minute movie from Wes Craven that tops its predecessor and will leave you absolutely wanting more.

"Scream 2" is rated R for violence and language.
