memeories never had...

its strange, writing this. i never knew him, though i had a teahcer back in high school who tought him. he is said to have been an exceptional student in art. i've looked through this book over and over, letting the images, words, phrases just seep into my mind. its a personnal diary, yet this book tells a story of a life, fully of energy burning to the limits...and beyond. unfortunately that bright candle was put out very suddenly by an unfortunate accident. he died trying to help a country that he love working in, helping the children and people of war-torn somalia. the book tells of conflict, confusuion, burdens, pains, laughter and joys. it is of a one man journly to help where ever he could, and to tell the world what was going on. its a great book for art lovers, or anyone else...i definately recommend it.

A visual bible of how to correctly lead a creative life

In this case, a picture is worth infinite words. In my case, I bought the book based on title alone: it drew me in that fast. When I got home, I was immediately fascinated by the beautifully raw artwork. This is the kind of stuff that just pours out, instant genius because it does what all the best art does: breaks the rules because it's simply not concerned with them; never pauses to imagine there are any in the first place. It's created with a childs intuition to make things just because they needs to be made, with no fear, and because making things is worthwhile. And FUN. This is fun stuff to take in because it's so pure. So; that part of the book is amazing. BUT THEN - you go back to the beginning and read the incredible account of Dan's life as told through his mothers eyes, and then the work transcends genius and becomes as powerful as christ on the cross, or an indian totem, or a japanese garden, or the Koran, or a family quilt, or a sunset. Suddenly all the visual clues that were at first just visually beautiful, they become a life. A wonderful life of young love, adventure, immortality, success, understanding, and tragedy. I felt like I knew these people. I wish I did. I want a journey like this one. Between the work itself and a mother's public contemplations on what the work is about, this book becomes golden. It will change you for the better, I guarantee, and in the meantime make you aware of this 22 year old kid who, above all his talents, simply knew how to live. Something many of us, myself included, often have trouble with because of all those damned rules. Enjoy.

Amazing

Wow, how does one do justice to a person's work that provokes feelings beyond words? Dan Eldon is someone that inspires me. He exudes a youth and exhuberance that exceeds even death. His journals are uninhibited and I am honoured to be able to glimpse even a tiny glance into his heart and soul. His journals are more artistic, but for students of economic development and international relations, Dan Eldon's story told through the video "Dying to Tell the Story," is truly poignant and a must see. This video had me in tears and I admire Eldon for going out there and revealing a truth of the world economy and violence that most people are unwilling to do or simply, ignorant of. For those hardened cynics, Eldon's story will surely break your heart.

beautiful book

This is an inspiring art book made by a truly passionate person. I think it tells a beautiful story using pictures and words. Artists and humanitarians will love this book. After looking at this book, I am left with the impression that Dan Eldon must have been a wonderful person and he definitely lives on in these pages. I cannot wait to read about him further and see the video as well.

Listen to different peoples' reactions to this book.

This book will undoubtedly be admired on several levels. It is the story of a life well lived, it is an example of limitless creativity, and it is a reminder of the larger injustice that permeates much of this world.

Personally, I admire Eldon's work for several reasons. Like Eldon I am dyslexic and take inspiration from the fact that he did not let his disability hamper him in any fashion. His journal is a commentary on many things including, life, art, injustice, passion, and perception. Eldon made extrordinary use of his talents in his short life time. His art and experience teach us that the value in life is in the process of living itself, not in goals and dreams that inevitably postpone happiness.
