Excellent -- fulfills the promise of digital music
Wouldn't it be great if you could access all of your
music
at all times in any room of your house and listen to it as albums or as playlists you make on the fly? Well, it's awesome and now it's convenient. The way it works is that you have all of your music on one computer and the
Sonos
system
will bring it to every room in the house where you have a Sonos satellite unit. The unit is a wireless networking device and an amplifier so you plug it straight into your speakers in the rooms. It generates its own wireless network so don't worry about having a network already. (By the way, you can also plug a CD player or other source into the Sonos and route that into the speakers as well.) In a phrase, the Sonos is like an iPod that controls your whole house.
Anyway, I feel this is sort of like a Tivo -- you don't realize you need it but once you use it and you can have access to all of your music and control it in this way, you won't want to go back for sure.
There are two ways to do it. Either you can rip all of your CD's to mp3 or if you have moved beyond CDs you can get a subscription music service (Rhapsody and Yahoo offer this now) and have that feeding your PC. Either way, the Sonos will get all of that music around the house.
The controller device (you only need one and it controls the whole house) is very convenient -- it's basically an iPod for your house. I found it very intuitive.
The set up was very easy.
I have found the sound quality to be very good. I don't feel I am making any sacrifices here. Mind you, I am not a super super audiophile running things through gold cables but it always sounds good to me.
Once in a while there is a hitch and something isn't working for a while. This is very unusal but in the interest of full disclosure it is not unknown. I personally believe this is 98% attributable to the Rhapsody system but anyway, it's not as 100% reliable as say a CD player. Anyway, the Sonos has never failed to come through on an important occasion so it's very much in my good graces.
I highly recommend the Sonos system.

The Best Invention since indoor plumbing - face it toast aint' that interesting
In my book, this product gets five stars across the board. In all of the categories that mean anything to anyone who has bought an electronics device:
- Functionality: Dude! this gadget is loaded with it. I don't need to rehash. But this does everything I dreamed of with regards to networking my house with the ability to play
music
. So I don't know what Bill Gates feels like when he walks into a room and the wall art and lighting changes based on his preferences... But I almost know that feeling now with my music!!!
- Ease of use: I had this thing set up in less than 1 half hour. My wife didn't even have time to yell at me for wasting the evening behind a stereo cabinet tangled in wires. Manuals and set up materials so straight forward and very user friendly.
- Customer Service: I suspect I had a minor defect with my controller. Nothing that prevented me from getting full use, but worth reporting none the less. Amazon's customer service in the whole return plociy.. worthless. Sono's hooked me up and I am back in business. This company is a true model when it comes to customer service. Most e-tailers or electronics vendors these days seem to hide any way of contacting them directly, putting you through all sorts of menu driven services... after about 45 minutes you find you've gotten no where. Not with
Sonos
. 4 levels of menu at max and I was talking to someone directly.
I believe (especially after rereading what I just wrote) I am officially a Sonos Evangelist. Can't say enough about this thing. In my household, there is not another thing that gets more attention... poor dog. Had to make room for child #3... now, Sonos... here Sonos, Goood Sonos!!!!

Sonos is AWESOME
This is my favorite new gadget in the last 5 years. Its revolutionary, like Tivo its hard to get it from the descriptions, but just as Tivo wasn't just another VCR this isn't just another media player.
Sonos
literally changes the way you listen to
music
, the product works so well that it becomes transparent and all that is left is the bliss of all your music, all over your house.... it stunning.
I have yet to find a real flaw with this product.

Music Everywhere!
The demo on the
Sonos
website tells you everything you need to know. This
system
is incredible! I initially bought one
ZP100
Music
bundle
to be sure it worked with my iMac G4 (800MHz) as advertised. It worked flawlessly, and so I bought another ZP100 bundle and a single ZP80 to put my home theater in the Sonos network. Now I have music all over my house which I can control from my iMac or each of the two iPod like remote controllers. I organize all my music with iTunes, including album artwork which is wonderfully displayed on the Sonos controller.
Things to keep in mind. Yes, it is pricey, but it is significantly less expensive than high end room wiring solutions. The system cannot play protected (DRM) files from iTunes Music Store or other vendors (there is a work-around for this). Once I learned about this product, I stopped buying iTunes music (which I seldom did anyway) and started buying CDs. Overall the ZP100 is the way to go because you don't need to turn anything on or off. You leave it on and you have music whenever you want. The ZP80 is for your ampilified system which you may not be leaving on all the time.
May I also suggest the Sony SS-MB350H. These are highly rated bookshelf speakers (Consumer reports) and I agree with their rating. I bough 4 pairs for my ZP100s!
I bought directly form Sonos. Great Teach support. I had a dead controller (replaced within a week), and I had a network problem that was easily fixed (power cycled the ethernet hub).

Revolutionary in its execution
Other reviewers have done a good job covering the function of this device so I won't go into that. I just wanted to give my thanks to the people at
Sonos
. Very few pieces of consumer electronics work so flawlessly and add so much utility. I love it like I love my PVR. They offer a money back guarantee and I'm sure they don't have many people take advantage of it. I have called their Tech Support 4 times and a knowledgeable person has picked up within 3 rings every time. I called not because I was having any real problems but because I had some questions about advanced features. They know their product and are very friendly and speak English natively. I will eventually have ten of these positioned throughout the house. We are building a new house and I was going to spend more on a hardwired distributed audio
system
that wouldn't have done nearly as much. If I had to offer a complaint it would be that the touch wheel isn't as responsive and precise as the one on my iPod - not bad but it could be better. Tech support did say they can improve this in a new firmware update and it sounded like they were planning on doing just that. They have a history of improving their already great product through firmware updates.
The ace in the hole with Sonos is when you interface it with the Rhapsody all you can eat
music
service. It is unbelievable. You have access to all of the 1.6+ million Rhapsody songs and the 100+ Rhapsody radio stations from the Sonos remote for less that $10 a month. The Rhapsody songs/albums need to be added to your Rhapsody library first with a computer but it beats trying to navigate 1.6 million songs without a keyboard and mouse. I can't image wanting Satellite Radio when you could use Sonos with Rhapsody. You can even create your own Radio stations by selecting which music you like, up to 10 groups, and Rhapsody plays those 10 plus others similar to them.
Each Zoneplayer also has an audio input that works great for interfacing an iPod or other audio source such as a TV playing throughout the house and pool area during a Super bowl party.
Just try it. You won't be disappointed.
