This one's worth it

Unfortunately, I wasted a little bit (or more) of money this holiday season. I'm glad to say that this particular toy was absolutely NOT a waste. I had the older model for my older kids, but got rid of that one when they outgrew it. Remembering how much they enjoyed playing with it (we even used it for our garage sale), I bought this one for my youngest daughter, who is four.

This is an excellent cash register! It comes with a lot of play money and provides hours of learning fun. Really, my daughter just loves playing store, scanning items, using her "Kroger Card" and the credit card. She enjoys hearing the machine say "Credit Approved" (or declined!), and she loves putting the coins in the coin slot and having the register recognize which coin it was.

This cash register has many more features than the older one (which I truly liked), and that adds to the play value, I suppose, especially for a younger child. There are some simple math games on this one, too, but the games are really geared to kids just a bit older than 4.

However, my daughter has only had this for 2 days and she has already started to grasp some money concepts that she didn't have before. We've gone over coin values and she's undertanding that the paper money has different values, as well-- although we really haven't begun to go over that. And, interestingly enough, she's asked about some of the figures on the bills and the coins. She's especially interested in Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln.

This is a great toy. And, as I mentioned before, it really does work as a cash register, as well. So, you can use it for simple sales such as garage sales, lemonade stands, etc.

Great Learning Tool

Bought this for a three year old I babysit. I was really inpressed with it. Not just a typical cash register. It counted the coins and even has math games to play with the money included. The only drawback is the register opens really fast and hard so make sure your little ones legs are not right up against the drawer but other than that its great. They have fun and learn at the same time..Wonderful

Great toy with educational value

I bought this for my son's 4th birthday. Not only does he love playing with it, but his 6-year-old and 2-year-old sisters love it as well. The younger 2 like playing with the money and working the register. My 6-year-old enjoys trying to play some of the different games which include addition and subtraction plus money games. There are 3 different levels for each game. The money games include inserting coins to match a specified amount and "typing" in numbers to match a stated amount. My only complaint about this toy would be that the drawer opens so quickly that the coins frequently shoot out. My older 2 have gotten used to guiding the drawer to help prevent this. Overall great toy that is great for different age groups, especially for kids who are fastinated with money!

The perfect educational toy

Huge applause to Learning Resources for producing the very best educational toy in my 2.5 year old's collection. We picked up a market set similar to the Play Wonder Mini Market Set and prop store items as well, which really helps stage a realistic 'checkout' experience. She loves to play cashier, scan and bag items, collect payment and return change. Now, when we go to the supermarket, she studies the cashier's every move and applies it to her next play session.

The developers applied great attention to realism and detail in this product to ensure that kids can grow into the features as they mature and learn. When a child plugs a coin (either the included play coins or a real coin) into a coin slot, a voice identifies each coin. My 2.5 year old can now identify real coins-from pennies to quarters-by sight. And thanks to the cash register, my daughter understands the basics of payment systems--she realizes that a credit card and cash are used in exchange for goods. When we're shopping, she enjoys handing my cash or credit card to the cashier and studying the transaction.

Its the features that my daughter doesn't yet understand that really make this product an excellent investment. It includes several exercises and games that help teach basic math skills (heck, I even enjoy playing them). The depth and detail in the simulation is excellent, and really elevates this product way beyond any other 'toy' cash register. The scanner works very well (it even 'scans' stuffed animals to my daughter's delight) and verbalizes a random price. Every so often, it will throw in a discounted or closeout price. When the child hits the 'checkout' button, the voice asks 'cash or charge?' If the child scans a credit card, one hears a modem connect sound before receiving a verbal approval. Interestingly, many of the responses are heard infrequently (such as a declined credit card!), which really keeps the experience fresh even after weeks of play.

Negatives? The drawer shoots open in the blink of an eye, which scared the crap out of my daughter, me, and the family dog the first time it happened. Not a big deal, though for such an excellent product. Very highly recommended.

I was delightfully surprised with this toy

I was really surprised with this toy, It is cute with the talking when you scan items ("cleanup on aisle 3") and checks credit, etc. It has games that grow with the child, and it is well built. A lot of people complain about the drawer, but I think the drawer is realistic, maybe the problem is the change. The problem with the change is, real money has different weight and feel so we recognize them to the touch, wheras this money is equal weight plastic. I would have put another slot for the 20 dollar bills also. We laminated our money. Otherwise this is a great product that provides fun with education, unlike the other cash registers out there that maybe are just good for pretend and not actual learning.
