Some problems, but happy ending with some tips

I chose this phone over other Smartphones, such as Blackberry, mainly because I like that it runs on a Windows format and that it has easy to use PDA functions.

I purchased this phone in an AT&T store. The first 24 hours I had the phone, I loved it. It was very easy to use and navigate, even for someone who was using a PDA/phone combo for the first time. However, a day or two after buying it, I started having problems. The first major problem is that it seemed that I couldn't get a signal anywhere and it was dropping all calls. Second, I could not send any text messages. Every time I tried to send a text message, I would get an error message sent back to me. Lastly, the screen was constantly freezing up. I immediately called AT&T and they tried everything they could over the phone--troubleshooting, sending the phone updates, etc. None of that worked so they suggested that I take the phone back to the store and exchange both the phone and the SIM card, since either could have been the root of my problems. I did this, exchanging the phone and SIM card and have had virtually no problems since. The only issue I still have is that I occasionally get an error message when the phone is trying to automatically connect to check my email. I think this is just that it is having problems connecting to the network and the error message always goes away and the phone is soon able to connect. The 2nd phone also works better, I believe, because of some advice one of the sales people gave me when I went back to exchange...

READ THIS TIP: Each time you open an application, there is an X in the top right hand corner to close the application when you are done. This does not actually close AND stop the application. It simply closes, or "hides," that application's window. The application is still running! This is important because if you open and use several applications and then X out of each, all of those applications are actually still running. This can slow down the phone (causing the screen freeze up I was experiencing) and also runs down the battery. To actually stop an application once you are through using it, you must go to Settings, then System, then Memory, and choose Stop All to stop the programs.

Other information--When you first buy the phone, the battery life is mediocre. I suggest keeping it plugged into a charger as much as possible. I got that tip from another review and it helps. The battery life continues to improve.

Pros: runs on Windows format, easy to use, PDA functions, I love the picture speed dial (you can add a picture of someone to your screen that you just touch to speed dial them), keyboard easy to use, seems to get pretty good reception for calls

Palm Treo 750 is a fine phone

I bought mine soon after it had been released, through an authorized Cingular dealer I found on EBay. I paid $450 for it with no strings attached. Since I already had a Cingular account that was out of its prison phase, I didn't want to enter Cingular prison again in order to save $100.

I have been very impressed with its reception. I get full signal in places where I had trouble with my Sony Ericson before. The call quality is great, and the features of the phone are unreal.

I also bought two 2GB MiniSD cards ($25 ea.) and a thumb-drive sized MiniSD reader($9.95) at CompUsa. That gives me a 2GB thumb drive to carry around with me, as well as 2GB of storage for the phone (total of 4GB available storage). From any PC with a USB connection, I can download podcasts, MP3's and other things by using the MiniSD reader and swapping between the two cards. Nice.

I have had one annoying problem with the phone. Sometimes it quits making sound. This means that it won't ring when you get a call. It happens randomly and without warning. I have taken to performing a soft-reset before plugging the charger. This seems to keep it ringing most of the time. After a month or two of this problem and the Cingular guys having no idea how to solve it (it always was working whenever I'd take it into a Cingular Store) I finally found that Palm had quietly released a fix for the problem. I downloaded and applied it and everything seems fine now.

Overall this is an extremely capable phone with nice features - the ability to play solitaire while in the bathroom is no small matter! - but I am a little disappointed in Palm's handling of the obvious bug in the system's firmware.

a little disappointed.

I purchased the phone because i was going to be traveling oversea. I discovered that I could not use a calling card with the phone. it just did not work. I guess I thought this phone was wifi, my missunderstanding.
so it wasn't very use full. I had to internet cafe all over asia. One of the main reasons i purchased the phone so I would not have to do this.

More like 4.5 stars. I don't give 5's

Treo 750 - Carrier: AT&T

I have had the phone for 3 weeks now and traveled 3 states: I am a Windows Mobile User from way back so I like this phone. But some Windows Mobile versions have not been that great. I like the way Palm integrated the use of windows in this model. If you like flexibility and choices chances are Windows Based PDA's are for you. If on the other hand you like it simpler I would not get a Windows PDA. Example: You will probably want to change the Today Screen format so you see what you want rather than the way it is set up when you get it. That being said here are the pros and cons.

CONS:

1. The keyboard buttons are kind of small for me because my fingers are big but I have still managed to get past this and the phone is smaller. (Sort of Con)

2. The voice function starts programs but does not let you voice dial unless you pay extra for a program which I understand is not fully functional yet without affecting other programs and supposedly is being fixed in the next version of Windows Mobile.

3. I cannot tell if I have a phone call without seeing the screen. In my Cingular 8125 the status light would blink yellow if I had a missed call, text message or voicemail so I could tell at a glance.

PROS:

1. I have disabled the touchscreen during calls because it tends to set off a program I may not want to run at that time. You can still use the buttons to control all functions. (was a Con but since I can disable the touchscreen, that's a Pro)

2. I like being able to use any mp3 as my ring. (just put the song in the Windows/Rings folder and choose that in your phone as the ring.

3. Palm has always had a good camera and at 1.3 megapixels this one is no exception. The pictures are great in many types of lighting unlike my 8125 which had marginal pictures at best.

4. The touchscreen is more sensitive and does not tend to get uncalibrated like my other PDA's. I like to put on a shieldzone (zagg) screen film to save the screen an on my 8125 that made the screen less sensitive. No problem here.

Battery Life: About 2 days, probably less if you are using the internet which is pretty fast when you have a 3g connection. But as fast as the processor is that's not surprising.

Windows Media 10: It plays videos very well, larger sizes as well. You may have to stop some programs if you have to many loaded so it doesn't get choppy, but that's a well know Windows Mobile 5 issue that I can totally live with.

Call Quality is very good and so is the speaker phone although I don't use it that much.

Bluetooth: Very easy to use and good distance.

I really like this phone and I am able to make a call even when my friends who were on vacation with me and have the same wireless carrier could not get a signal.
