Excellent GPS
I recently purchased the Nuvi
650
and have been extremely pleased with it. It is very intuitive to use and the screen is bright and clear. Directions have been amazingly accurate. The spoken street names are a great feature on this model.
Great product
GPS
arrived as scheduled and works great.
I agree with others that it seems odd that
Garmin
wouldn't include a carrying case and AC adapter (I went to Staples and bought an attachment that allows you to plug your car adapter into it and plug it into a wall outlet).
how did I do without it?
I just ordered and received my
Garmin
Nuvi
650
(refurb). It looks brand new and well worth the savings over new.
I compared Magellan and Garmin at the local bigbox stores. For me, Garmin's software is super easy. I felt like I was using a
GPS
device, not a technologically advanced device. To me, that is a major distinction. My 4 year old daughter was able to use the interface without hesitation. The Garmin interface is so fantastically simple to operate that within minutes I created my Home address as well as several Favorites.
I also put it to the ultimate test by making a drive to a location 35 miles away, down 2 lane country roads, without a map and only an address to go by. It took me there in the time estimated for my arrival. Once I reached the destination, I pressed Home and proceeded to make my way home without any issues.
Fantastic mapping. When I knew my area, i purposely chose an alternate route and the device quickly recalculated the route based upon my driving change.
Any gps can function in a big city, on major roads, but when it can function correctly on 2 lane country roads, I am amazed. Fantastic device. No bluetooth but that's not a big deal for me. The voice prompts were loud and clear and the street pronunciations were dead on.
The lack of accessories doesn't hamper me. The included usb cable charges the unit when connected to a computer as well as the car charger. I only use mine for family trips, not day to day to/from work so the case wasn't a big drawback for me.
In addition, even though I purchased a refurbished unit, it still qualified for the 2009 Maps. i was able to download and install the current maps for free. Thanks Garmin!
Update:
We used the Garmin Nuvi 650 on vacation this weekend to go to Hocking Hills, Ohio. It performed flawlessly. Our friends met us up there using paper maps. The return home, we left not from our Cabin location but from a different location that they did not have mapped out. I just selected my pre-configured Home button and followed the GPS' directions. Our friends could not believe that we would trust this GPS device wholeheartedly, without any paper maps to review. It got us home perfectly, and our friends followed us as they no longer had a route home via their paper maps.
Do I trust the Garmin Nuvi 650? Yes. Map routing has proved to be excellent, re-routing has proved to be excellent, performance has proved to be excellent, and the 4.3" screen is perfect. Better yet, my wife loves it.
Update - We took the Nuvi 650 to Norris Lake, TN (or rather it took us). Fantastic. It took us up to the address we had for our rental Cabin resort much better than the minimal directions provided by the resort owner. The return trip returned a slightly different route. Instead of taking us directly to interstate 75, it directed us to 25W for 22 miles and then linked us to 75N. 25W turned out to be a great drive showcasing America. If you trust the Nuvi 650, it will get you to your destination and may provide for some additional views that you may never have seen otherwise.
Finding restaurants or rest stops while traveling is great now. We can plan ahead for a future stop. As my title indicates, I don't know how I got along without it before.

Almost good enough as advertised
I updated the latest maps since I got my unit few days ago. All features seem to be working well. But it couldn't locate a nearby restaurant (La Madeleine in Houston)that has been in existence for quite awhile. It located one branch 7.6 miles away which was not the branch we were going to. Other establishments near the restaurant were located successfully though when I tested it. Hmmm... Inserted an SD card with mp3 songs. Excellent sound.
Great GPS
Simple and easy to use. Loaded with features. Screen is very easy to read. Voice prompted turns works great.
