almost portable, but not really!
If you have an HP Pavilion desktop PC with the
personal
media
drive
bay, then this is an absolute must have...especially if the PC is Windows Media Center edition. I bought the HP Pavilion m8300f and I added this
750
GB Personal Media Drive to the already exsisting 640GB HD for a total of 1,400GB (or 1.4TB) storage. Just to give an idea, a 2-hour movie that's recorded & stored is approx 7-8GB, so it adds up fast. Admittedly, this HP Personal Media Drive is not really portable in the classic sense as compared to Western Digital's Passport series. I use the WD 250GB in addition to my Sony VAIO notebook PC when I'm on the road travelling.

Easy, quick, a bit noisy
This well built
USB
hard
drive
has enormous capacity and good design with two colored lights in front to show power status and activity. In this case, "well built" also translates into large. The unit itself isn't small, and when you add in the box on the power cord, there's lots of hardware. On the other hand, if you own an HP
media
computer with a media drive bay, it couldn't be more elegant. Out of the box, you simply slide the drive into the bay until it firmly seats. That's all. You're done. Power up the computer and you have tons more storage.
Given the slight price premium for such elegance, this unit would still be perfect if it weren't for its internal cooling fan. Now, I'm not a novice when it comes to noise control, and the Hp media computers aren't all that quiet themselves when they get their board, drive, and graphics fans all going at once. And, since the drive simply slides into the bay with some aligning ridges, there's bound to be some vibrational noise.
All that being said, the cooling fan in the unit is a virtual orchestra of hums, whoops, whines, wails, and shrieks. I've gotten into the habit now of putting the computer to sleep when I'm out of the room. I woke in the middle of the night to a high pitched whine which I eventually determined was the drive fan. I put the computer to sleep, and I got some.
In fairness, it may simply be a "burn-in" problem, as it seems to have somewhat quieted down. It still murmurs occasionally but overall it seems to have settled down to a sullen mutter rather than its former rebellious yell.
One note of caution: Most if not all backup programs will see this as an
external
drive, and not see this drive as part of your computer. MS OneCare automatic backup will see it as a backup device but not as a computer drive. It won't back it up. If you're using it for initial storage you'll need a configurable backup program like GoodSynch or NovaBackup.
Overall, if the unit continues to calm down aurally, it will be perfect. If not, it'll just be quite good. Not bad either way.

Get It
An excellent product. It's worth the slight extra cost over other
external
hard
drive
s just because you can slide it into the slot of some HP computers. Be aware that it should be inserted or removed only when the computer is shut down.

Great addition to my Media PC
750
GB is a great size in a small package that slides right into the front panel of my m8000
Media
Center PC. I take a lot of digital photographs and this is a great device for cataloging and processing large numbers of large RAW photos. The price was reasonable, though not cheap, at $228.00. If the price drops, I might just buy another.

So far, so good
I am very happy so far with my new HP
Personal
Media
Drive
. It seems to perform as well or better than I expected and is not as loud as I expected from some of the other reviews. You can't beat the way it fits right into the slot in the front of the HP computers. It is extremely convenient for HP desktop owners with a Personal Media Drive Bay. I would definitely recommend it to someone if they were looking for an
external
hard
drive.
