The Simple Life

Life today is complex and chaotic. Of The Imitation of Christ is a refreshing antidote to modern day living, although it offers timeless spiritual truths. It simplifies spiritual truths which may be buried under layers of modern day secularism and worldliness. Highly recommended.

Sanctuary

True spirituality transcends the differences in religious traditions; as a devotee of Krishna, I delight in Thomas a Kempis and his Imitation of Christ. I dip into it almost daily. For anyone who seriously wants to purify her life and attain the tranquillity and joy of unalloyed love of God, this book is a treasure.

Thomas a Kempis writes from his own deep realisation and conviction and just by reading a few lines, you enter his atmosphere of devotion. It's difficult enough practising spiritual life in these times and this book is an invaluable help. Readers of this book may also like The Nectar of Instruction by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami.

Absolutely Excellent!!!!!!!!

The author has a spirit of humility that permeates the entire work. He is a man of God indeed. What a legacy we have in this truly inspiring book! This is the kind of reading that will transform your life for the better.

Nuggets of truth are found throughout the whole book. The insight he shares is for any culture, any place, and all generations. His closing comments give a flavor of what one can find: "If the works of God were such that they could easily be comprehended by human reason, they would not rightly be called either wonderful or unspeakable."

This 500 year old book is so much more relevant today than a lot of what is being turned out on the press now. It helps you to put things into proper perspective.

Awesome is all I can say.

I can only say that every Christian, or person for that matter, should read this book. The other reviewers have done a great job with giving you detail and I second all the possitive reviews. Invest the time to read passages of this book regularly and your life will get better, period.

One reason I'm no longer a Christian

This book deserves the title "classic" as much as any other. At one point during the middle ages it was more widely read than the Bible. Its essential message is that when Christ said "deny yourself...and follow me" he was being literal. By which I mean: if you are not already living a saintly, self-denying, life in a soup kitchen in Calcutta you're not a Christian; just a pretender. This book caused a crisis of faith in me when I read it in college because, religious as I was then, I had no answer to it. It led me to seriously consider becoming a priest before -- with a little help from Nietzche (I wish books could have this kind of impact on me still) I decided that if this is what Christianity demands....no thank you. If you are not religious I think the only point of reading this book is for its historical significance. But if you are a practicing Christian, be ready to question your commitment to your faith.
