Without Fail

Another good Lee Childs book...the protagonist, Reacher, is not a deep guy...he's smart, ruthless, single minded and honest but not particularly introspective...that's fine because he's smart and he's tough and he prevails against the bad guys...if I want psychological depth I'll read something more challenging...this is escape stuff for men...kind of like watching a good, smash mouth football game...

Fine 6th Jack Reacher -- Secret Service thriller !!

We have read the entire Lee Child / Jack Reacher series, so obviously we enjoy these action packed thrillers about nice guy, smart guy, ex-MP Reacher. "Without Fail" is no exception, and a fast start -- a near-miss assassination attempt on Vice President-elect Armstrong -- soon leads the Secret Service to haul in Jack to act as a consultant and help them try to penetrate their security surrounding the veep so that they can plug any loopholes. Using an old Army friend, tough gal Frances Neagley, and teaming up (after hours as well!) with M.E. Froelich, who heads the responsible SS security team, Reacher is soon puzzling over hand delivered messages and video tapes before the more proactive action gets things heated up. That Froelich is an ex-lover of Jack's now deceased brother Joe only adds to the intrigue and gets Jack more involved emotionally than usual. Before it's over, a wild movie-like SUV chase out in Montana snow country finally leads to the real perpetrators. And who will get who in the end?

The Reacher series is loaded with clever plots, non-stop action and thrills. Rarely a dull moment keeps paging turning quickly; and Child's satisfying endings, often involving vigilante justice on the part of our hero to set things straight, rarely fail to please. While the premise of this one seemed a little less plausible than his other novels, Child's inside look at the Secret Service served as a good foil for Reacher. We wouldn't mind seeing more of his sidekick Neagley in future books; and as usual, this story just leaves us anxious for the next Jack Reacher outing!

Just Didn't Quite Grab Me

I am a big fan of Lee Child. He's arguably the greatest mystery writer around today but this book just did not quite grab my attention like the others. One of the biggest knocks on Child is that he spends too much time on minute details. In this book, he spent an enormous amount of time on the smallest of details. The constant review of the videotape filming the Secret Service cleaners got to be nerve wracking. In fact, I was tempted to just skip ahead of all of that because it was a pain.

In my view, this book is probably one of Child's weaker efforts.

Without Fail Succeeds

I loved this book! I could not put it down. Jack Reacher is my hero, the guy is unbeatable and resourceful.

His brother Joe's former girlfriend, who is Secret Service guarding the Vice President Elect, induces Reacher to infiltrate her team to find holes in their security, and does he ever!

After the boring part in the beginning about questioning the cleaning crew, this book takes off. Reacher and his friend, Neagley are pros of the first order. This time Lee Child is a little easier on the FBI. He has a tendendcy toward FBI bashing. But the book was a mile a minute and an excellent read.

Excellent Job - Without Fail

This is a well thought out mystery-espionage-retribution-contempt of the government novel. It's well researched as to changing venue and as always, the dialogue is crisp, to the point, and doesn't pander to humor or overt macho friendship.

Jack Reacher does certain things well. As I have mentioned in the past, he's a throwback to the 60's insofar as his similarity to Clint Eastwood in the 'Dirty Harry' Series and McQueen in 'Bullit.' Yet Reacher is his own man, investigating, analyzing, discussing options and seeking justice. Many times it's his own justice for which there is rare 'look the other way' tendencies from the pompous government agencies. Here it's a little different in his dealings with the Secret Service, sworn to protect the President and in this case, the vice-President with their lives.

There's also usually a beautiful woman present, and here it's M.E., brother Joe's old girlfriend. M.E. has risen in the ranks of the Secret Service and doubting the efficiency of her team, wants to see if an "outsider" can penetrate the protection that they have created for the vice-President. Reacher takes the job and consults with an old friend from his military days, Frances Neagley, also hot, also a stone cold killer.

What M.E. hasn't told Reacher is that in the first place, the drills against her team protecting the VP aren't necessarily practice. Several potential attempts have been made against the new VP. Additionally, she has never resolved her feelings toward Joe, now deceased, and wants to explain, discuss and explore them with Reacher. Maybe.

One of my favorites. As always, Mr. Child has a good plot, good characters and good action. And a great hero. 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury
