Great PDA
I bought this for my teenage son. I had bought him an older, used one, spent money to replace the battery, and then it died before I even received the battery. This one is extremely fast, has a lot of memory, and my son will do his reports for school on it. He seems to have problems with many of his gadgets, but he absolutely loves this and it's still working great for him.
Easy even for me
My first foray into the world of PDAs has been very pleasant with this
iPaq
111
. It's sleek and easy to manage, and I know I'm not using it nearly as much as I could (or in all the ways that I could).
I have only two complaints -- one: maaaan, it sucks down battery power like a starving man at a buffet, and two: I have not yet figured out all the nuances of downloading email attachments to the folder of my choice. But I'm a novice yet, and time will tell.
Meanwhile, I can heartily recommend this (except for the battery-suckage, cuz, sheesh) to other PDA newbies.

Best PDA ever
Stand-alone PDAs aren't so popular these days, but this is exactly what I was looking for when I lost my old
iPaq
2495. I've had a number of PDAs from different companies -- Palm, Dell, and HP (both Jornada and iPaq). The iPaq
110
is in every way the best PDA yet.
I expected the unit to be better -- smaller, brighter display, better back light, more memory, faster processor -- and I was not disappointed in any respect. This is the first iPaq stand-alone PDA with WM6 (Microsoft Windows Mobile 6), which is a nice upgrade. The mapping of the four main buttons is more logical. WiFi works better. HP adds to WM6 a very nice implementation of Bluetooth, which works very well.
I was surprised at how much the unit is improved ergonomically. The power switch is perfectly placed for easy, one-hand operation and a minimum chance of accidentally turning the unit on. I was concerned that the iPaq
111
doesn't have a cover like the 2495 does. I needed the 2495's cover because without it, I was always accidentally turning the unit on. But with the power switch on the side, I have never accidentally turned my iPaq 111 on. The record button is the easiest to use of any of the PDAs I have ever owned. All the buttons, including the D-pad, work very well, with a good tactile feedback and easy operation.
All my previous PDAs have been a pain to charge. They all had special connectors for charging. Sometimes they required special charging voltages. The iPaq 111 charges through the USB port, which uses a standard USB - miniUSB cable. The charger is a wall-wart unit that provides 5V. AC charging is faster than charging through a USB port. I suppose that's because the AC charger can deliver more power. Battery life is excellent. I generally charge the unit every day. But I can easily go 2 or 3 days between charging; for example if I travel and forget my USB cable.
The iPaq 111 also takes good advantage of the new high-speed SD memory cards. I got an 8-Gig 6x speed card. It has worked flawlessly in the iPaq. It used to be that moving files from my PC to my PDA was painfully slow. Now it is so fast that I stopped using my USB thumb drive. If I have a few files to copy, I just copy them through ActiveSynch. If I have a lot of files, I plug the SD card into my computer's SD reader.
If you want a stand-alone PDA and you don't want to pay for a large VGA (640 x 480) screen, this is the best unit out there.

Cautionary note on the Marvell WiFi in the iPaq 111
A cautionary note for anyone looking to use the
iPaq
111
as a WiFi scanner or survey tool -- the WiFi driver does NOT properly report the channel to any of the common scanning utilities.
The Marvell SDIO8686 chipset reports the channel as "858512" for all channels. If you are relying on the unit as a survey tool, you are going to end up with bad data. A case opened with HP Support 4/22/08 has only gotten a "we'll look into it" response, and a hint that their might be a firmware update "coming soon".
If you rely on your scanner/stumbler/surveyor, make sure you try your utilities out first before buying this unit!

HP iPAQ 111
I purchased the
iPAQ
after thoroughly researching all PDA'S. Knowing nothing about these handy little devices I was convinced that I certainly needed a windows based unit. The iPAQ having bluetooth and WiFi was another much needed feature. Windows mobile 6 is everything I have read about seems to run smoothly, at least I haven't experienced any problems as of yet. Very easy to use, really nice to sync to your computer and add/remove whatever files you want. I haven't used the browser to much and wasn't really impressed with how it works although didn't really intend to use the iPAQ to surf the web anyways. Email and text messaging was what I wanted it for. The SDHC memory card is a nice feature also, 4 gb works perfect, from what I've read the 8 gb will also work although I haven't tried one yet. The music capabilities are a little to be desired, stick to your ipod! The case is a nice sleek design with a flat black finish on the back. The only improvement I would like to see is a bigger battery. Charge time is certainly more frequent especially when using the bluetooth WiFi features. I keep my charger with me most everyday. Overall I highly recommend the iPAQ
111
to those that are looking to upgrade and to the newbies like me, you won't be disappointed!
