Great Little Device
I've had the
Eee
PC since it first came out and am loving it. So far I use it for quick access to the internet and instant messenging, reading ebooks, keeping up with email, and playing music. It has a very nice music player and photo viewer. It worked beautifully while traveling to get me onto a hotel network. I can carry it in my fanny pack, so don't have to worry about whether to leave it in my car or hotel room.
I want to switch to ebooks as much as possible, and this has a very reasonable ebook reader called FBReader, which can display text in any direction, so you can hold the laptop sideways like a book and assign any key you want to advance the page. (The pc is light enough that this can be done for a long time without fatigue.) Text will go as large as you want using the + and - keys. The only downside is that you can't bookmark or annotate text. To get it working well, be sure to go to their online help and scroll down to the list of shortcut keys, which make it much more useful. For instance, the return key toggles it to take over the whole screen.
Ars Technica has an article explaining how to get the
webcam
working with Skype, and I'm really looking forward to using that.
It seemed strange at first to use mainly removable storage (a 4 gb SD card for me), but the big advantage of this approach is that you start to think of your data as easily transferable to any machine. I can pop out the SD card and play my music on my desktop PC if that's where I'm working. If that's the price of keeping the laptop small and light and with a decent battery life, it's well worth it.
All in all, a great, small, lightweight device for my web surfing and media, and I can do some real work if I have to with Open Office. My network engineer husband wants to get one, strip off the interface, and use as a straight
Linux
machine, so it covers a lot of territory. If you're not wedded to Windows and want a laptop that will go with you without the back ache, don't hesitate. You won't miss Windows at all, this is so easy to use. Compared to Vista, it's a dream.

Glad someone finally got around to making this
I wanted a very small, very cheap, very reliable/stable machine to get net access with, and
Asus
finally met that need. I've had my Asus
Eee
for a week now, and so far this laptop has exceeded my expectations.
Some things I think are worth knowing about the machine:
* The keyboard is large enough to touch type with.
* It has a standard VGA out port and can
drive
an external monitor at 1024x768 (handy for running power-point on the go).
* If you reboot the machine while holding down F9 it will restore everything to factory mint-condition. The quick and easy full system restore takes a lot of the worry out of any amateur
Linux
hacks and tinkering you might want to try.
* The version of Skype included with the Eee doesn't support web video conferencing. However, there are great how-to guides, wikis, and forums with information on the Eee. As a result, despite being completely new to Linux, I was able to install the Beta version of Skype and get the Eee's camera working with it.
* OpenOffice, which comes installed on the Eee, has evolved nicely. I haven't had any trouble working with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
* It plays nicely with USB devices. All of my USB devices have worked with it (thumb drives, external hd, keyboard, and mouse).

Excellent little machine!
I've had my
eee
for a few weeks now and I adore it. It's incredibly small but has a lot of power for its size. I have no problem typing on the keyboard, but if you've got big fingers you might want to pick up a larger portable keyboard to go with it.
This is my first time using
Linux
, but the interface is so easy to use I had no trouble adapting. It boots up really fast and shuts down even faster. The wifi reception is great too.
Basically, this thing is completely usable out of the box with no tweaking needed. You have to activate the
webcam
before it will work, though. The screen is crisp despite its small size, the sound is surprisingly good. Battery life seems to run about 3 hours as advertised.
If you've been looking for a really portable laptop that runs silently (it does get a little warm, but not hot), you'll like this one. It comes with a nice form-fitting case and a small adaptor with folding tines.

Great product!
I love this. It is the perfect ultraportable device. I compare it to 5.5" $1000+ ultraportables and not to full laptops. This as a secondary machine for times when you want something small and light so you can get on line, do some tasks or whatever - or take with you when you travel. In addition to the usual work related software there is a full entertainment suite. Folks comparing this to their 15" 6 lb laptop and finding it wanting are missing the point.
It runs a customized Xandros 4
Linux
distro and supports software like GIMP - but only if you hack it to advanced mode. There are excellent forums with information about how to hack it and the various Linux distros and software that have been installed on it - sometimes with detailed instructions. The small amount of "disk" space available isn't an issue - use a SD card, jump
drive
or portable
hard
drive to expand it.
There are also people who have upgraded the memory - but since the 8GB version with 1GB of
RAM
is coming out at $500, why not wait?
My Linux guru fell in love with it at first sight. I was surprised by the solid feel of the case.
And then there is its incredible cuteness factor...

Great ultra portable
This is simply a great device with very little shortcomings.
Let me get the cons out of the way first:
1) c
ram
ped keyboard
2) low battery life
3) screen could be a bit brighter
This is an ultraportable and the price is incredible. It is unfair to compare it to $399 8 lb behemothss.
So what if it doesn't have windows or an optical
drive
.
This thing is freeaking 2 lbs. I have a 15.4 Mac Book Pro with 4 gigs of ram & 160 HD but I prefer using this device for the sheer portability.
Everything you need is there - Web, Mail, SSH, Terminal, VNC, RDC (WIndows Remote desktop), Skype, Open Office, Adobe Acrobat, USB slots, etc...
80% of computing needs is met with this device.
Unlike the Nokia, smartphones, iphones, this runs real software. I've been a big Windows Mobile user for over 8 years and got tired of "pocket this and pocket that."
This works out of the box as-is. Fire up youtube and you got flash video working straight out of the box. The iPhone doesn't support flash or office documents. This has it!
Sure the iPhone is great (I own 2) but this runs rings around it. The Nokia N700-810s have a Symbian OS. This runs Xandros (Debian). I have Opera, Songbird, Google Earth working 'just like that.'
If you don't like
Linux
, you can install XP.
Buy this if you want something ultraportable and something that runs linux.
Perfect for IT admins.
