Awesome little machine

This is my first experience w/ the Linux operating system, and it is a very positive one. It would be a waste, really, to load XP on this device. Linux works just as well for the normal activities. This little machine has been well thought out and Linux is really easy to use. The programs that come pre-loaded on this machine run very well and are pretty comprehensive. Don't worry about messing it up, because if you do, it is really easy to restore back to factory. The only drawback is the small amount of HD space, most of which is taken up by the operating system. But, I added an 8GB SDHC card and have not had any problems... more than enough space for the normal activities. Linux runs fine w/ 512 of RAM, so no need to upgrade if you're going to run Linux. Very easy to learn & use and small and light. Keyboard is fine once you get used to it. I am getting at least 3 hrs on the battery, about what it is rated. This comes stock w/ both ethernet & wifi, and both work very well. Easy to set up to connect to the web (pretty much fool proof). Other than adding the SDHC card, I am running this machine stock, no modifications or enhancements, and it is performing very well! Great value for the $.

A Handy Computer That Is Easy To Use

I just received my Asus Eee Pc 7" computer a few days ago.
I was worried that it might be too small or too complicated
to use since I'm not computer saavy. Have no fear! This computer
is very easy to use. I have small hands and the keyboard fits my
hands very well. I don't think a man or woman with large hands would
feel comfortable with it. Mine came preloaded with Linux and I haven't
had any problems learning it. This computer truly does what it says in
the description and is easy to learn, easy to use and at 7" and 2lbs,
easy to carry in your purse or pocket. I wish I had bought this computer
a long time ago.

Portability, price and easy out of the box use...

I bought my Asus EEE overseas January 2008, it was preloaded as Chinese, but got the dealer to change it to English. The EEE means "easy to learn, easy to work, easy to play" and indeed it is easy to use, basically power it up and you're ready to go. Although, it is not as easy to use if you're already familiar with such an interface as Windows, but the big icons and tabbed menus really are common sense.

The size, anyone who has an Asus EEE probably got it for the small size, portability is a huge factor when one is traveling. Small is convenient, small is the main factor for Asus when marketing this laptop. Size is the reason I got it, that and price, under $400 [or even $350].

The operating system default is Linux, which is something I've never used before. I think of myself as a computer geek, not the ultra-make-your-own-computer-take-it-apart-kind, but the kind who designs, photoshops, surfs, works and does all kinds of things on a computer-kind. If you want to use the Asus EEE as is, without changing anything on it, that's fine but most people who get this are into hacking and advanced desktop modes, etc. I finally did learn to do that with the online help of several forums and the wiki, but I confess, Linux is not easy for the Windows user like me.

I did manage to install a few programs like Picasa and update drivers/files, but using the Asus EEE beyond what it is default-capable of is unnecessary and too hard. I applaud all the hackers/modders who have touchscreen, added RAM/GB storage, and even GPS...but the EEE to me isn't about all that.

The EEE is indeed enough for me to use when I'm traveling [not often], but having a computer with me to basically browse the internet and check email is way better than not having a computer with me. I take this to work every week to sit and surf simply, I do a bit of photo browsing and watching videos, but that's all easy. Anything else is going to be hard, like typing [when one is used to a normal sized keyboard] which cramps my fingers and the keys are a bit unsensitive. The touchpad is nice to use, especially with the side-scrolling, but I prefer a mouse. I've yet to be able to configure the mouse to side-scroll though, I tried doing all the advised Linux programming, not working for me...

I would recommend getting the Asus EEE [any version] if you're going to be doing basic things like internet, email, simple office-word/excel/etc and keep things to a minimum of having to type. Now that it's 4 months later after my original purchase, there are other bigger versions of the Asus EEE and even operating on Windows, which I would definitely trade for just for much easier everyday use. If you need to do more than basic computing, I would just get a normal laptop.

Portability, price and easy default out of the box use...that's why I got my Asus EEE.

I got more than I paid for

Asus makes an amazing little computer. It's small. Lightweight. Reliable. Boots up much faster than a computer with a Windows OS. The battery life is as good or better than I expected. Open Office is a wonderful office suite that has proven extremely compatible with Windows Office. The wireless connectivity has been flawless and reliable with no tweaking. I've watched some movies on it and was pleased with the video and audio. It has 4gb of memory so I've used a portable hard drive and that's been great since I switch between 3 laptops. The webcam works well as does the audio. Issues? Of course, it's tiny!! But I knew this and I'm perfectly fine with the trade-offs. Sometimes it's a little difficult to figure out what Linux is doing when you download a file but you can usually figure it out. The keyboard is small but is 1000 times better than trying to use a PDA or BlackJack. The screen is small so it's a little difficult viewing some things...but again, it's better than a PDA or BlackJack. And I knew this before I bought it. But being able to carry around a fully functional laptop that will fit into my purse...in theory...and weighs less than 3 pounds...I'm willing to make a few sacrifices. I'd recommend this to anyone that needs or wants a lightweight laptop. Even though there were some negatives, I still give it a 5 because it's exactly what the marketing says it is and more. It's sturdy and reliable as well as small and lightweight. Buy it...you won't be disappointed.

Asus Eee PC 4G

I bought this to have a very portable alternative to my PowerBook notebook. It is a very suitable alternative in that not only does it provide wifi connectivity, browsing and email, it also provides Skype within its Linux standard load. It provides a functional included alternative to Microsoft Office that works very well as a replacement application suite. The nusic, video, and picture applications are very functional and perform as expected. The wifi is very sensitive and the built in speakers are very acceptable. there is storage expansion via SD memory cards and additional memory to get to 1GB is easily and inexpensively accomplished. There are three USB ports on Eee PC and allow easy connections to printers, external DVD/CD drives, and pen drives. This a very useful machine for a small cost.
