Was Not Able to Recover My Files or Partition

The purpose of my purchase was to recover a hidden partition that HP makes on its Pavilion desktops. A drive containing this partition was slowly going bad, so I removed it until this software arrived. After putting the drive in an external USB drive enclosure, I tried to get Acronis to locate the partion for recovery. After several restarts of the drive using its power switch, the drive finally was listed in the Acronis inventory of connected drives.

I then attempted to move the partition to a different drive. Perhaps the drive was dying, but for whatever reason, the software was not able to move the partition. So my review is limited to the software's ability to perform just that one function.

However, on a more obvious side, the software has a place where it reports the installed memory on the computer. Despite my Dell Dimension 8300 having 4 identical 1 GB modules, the software reported only 2 GB present. How hard is that for the software to detect???

On the positive side I will say that on XP Pro, the CD installed without problems. I don't believe the software altered the master boot record, which I was afraid might happen. These findings are important to report in case anyone is interested in those types of usability issues.

I am sure that there are more features that I will eventually use, but my initial experience and impressions only permit me to rate this product 3 stars.

Sharp tool

The Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0's Partition Manager is the best partition tool I have seen in awhile, and I've used quite a few as I'm sure most have. This is a rare case of `cheaper is better', compared to the latest competitor offerings (as of May, 2007, which I also own from two other providers). This review is about Partition Manager only as I don't use the `Boot Manager' utility (I'm a die-hard GRUB person) nor the other utilities as I have them in other forms.

Partition Manager won't install directly onto a server, but it will onto a client partition of a multi-boot server configuration. This is unlike the other partition managers, which in addition to being rather dated do not allow installation on any system where a server partition is detected. Why put up with that? This is a tool that won't get in your way like the others.

I use Partition Manager on all of my lab machines, which typically boot four or five operating systems each, Linux and Windows, servers and workstations. Zero problems, unless you forget to go in and fix up your kernel pointers but hey, that's your (ok...my:)) fault and not Partition Manager's...and a simple edit job even if you do. These issues won't occur in simpler configurations and are unrelated to any particular partition tool, so not to worry.

The utility has two display modes, `automatic' and `manual'. Personally, I have never used the `automatic' mode, and I never will. I want to see partition information, not a bunch of drive icons, and I'm glad Acronis provides that choice.

I have included two Partition Manager screen shots of these two modes of a quad-boot Windows XPP, Win2KAS, SuSE10, Scientific Linux 4 machine with three drives to show the differences (if Amazon decides to publish them).

Four stars for the Partition manager; it's worth the price even without the other utilities.

Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0

I did extensively test the product both from the CD Rom bootup and within Windows XP Professional.

The product performed flawlessly on partitions without any hard disk sectors marked bad. However, if there is a sector marked bad, the Disk Director refuses to resize that partition.

Disk director

This is a pretty good program for creating partitions; a little difficult to use off the bat, but fairly easy to learn.
